Mamelodi Sundowns get second win

Posted: 8 September 2010 Time: 21:31

Mamnelodi Sundowns beat Platinum Stars 2-0 in a League match on Wednesday night.

The goals were scored by Katlego Mphela and Mabhudi Khenyeza.

Sundowns were the better team on the night and could have finished the game with a lot more goals, but their finishing in front of goal was very poor.

The Brazilians controlled the midfield battle from the outset and hence dominated the possession stakes. Stars, on the other hand, struggled to get hold of the ball and often compiled the pressure on them gifting possession bake to Sundowns with some poor passing.

The home side were on the attack from the first whistle and tested the Stars keeper as early as the sixth minute. Lebohang Mokoena tried his luck from about 20-yards out with a powerful shot, but Tapuwa Kapini was up to the challenge with a good save.

Kapini was called into action again nine minutes later, this time denying Surprise Moriri with a fantastic save diving full stretch to his right to palm away a 20-yard shot.

Eventually in the 27th minute Sundowns were able to make their pressure tell when Katlego Mphela broke the deadlock. A good passing movement by the Brazilians saw Mphela with the ball at his feet 12-yards out from goal. The Bafana striker made no mistake firing the ball home and giving his side the lead, 1-0.

Despite Sundowns dominating match proceedings, Bradley Grobler could have equalised for Stars in the 29th minute when he rose, unmarked, to head a right wing cross goal-wards. His effort, however, was a timid one and Calvin Marlin made a comfortable save.

The second half was more of the same as Sundowns continued to dominate proceedings and created chance after chance, but were simply, to the complete frustration of the coach, unable to finish the match off.

The last quarter of the match saw Stars pressing forward in search of an equaliser. This, however, left them exposed at the back and finally in the 90th minute of the match Sundowns were able to find the second goal they so rightly deserved.

The man to grab the goal was substitute Mabhuti Khenyeza who clinically headed home a right wing cross to seal matters and Sundowns a 2-0 win on the night.
