Mamelodi Sundowns get second win

Posted: 8 September 2010 Time: 21:31

Mamnelodi Sundowns beat Platinum Stars 2-0 in a League match on Wednesday night.

The goals were scored by Katlego Mphela and Mabhudi Khenyeza.

Sundowns were the better team on the night and could have finished the game with a lot more goals, but their finishing in front of goal was very poor.

The Brazilians controlled the midfield battle from the outset and hence dominated the possession stakes. Stars, on the other hand, struggled to get hold of the ball and often compiled the pressure on them gifting possession bake to Sundowns with some poor passing.

The home side were on the attack from the first whistle and tested the Stars keeper as early as the sixth minute. Lebohang Mokoena tried his luck from about 20-yards out with a powerful shot, but Tapuwa Kapini was up to the challenge with a good save.

Kapini was called into action again nine minutes later, this time denying Surprise Moriri with a fantastic save diving full stretch to his right to palm away a 20-yard shot.

Eventually in the 27th minute Sundowns were able to make their pressure tell when Katlego Mphela broke the deadlock. A good passing movement by the Brazilians saw Mphela with the ball at his feet 12-yards out from goal. The Bafana striker made no mistake firing the ball home and giving his side the lead, 1-0.

Despite Sundowns dominating match proceedings, Bradley Grobler could have equalised for Stars in the 29th minute when he rose, unmarked, to head a right wing cross goal-wards. His effort, however, was a timid one and Calvin Marlin made a comfortable save.

The second half was more of the same as Sundowns continued to dominate proceedings and created chance after chance, but were simply, to the complete frustration of the coach, unable to finish the match off.

The last quarter of the match saw Stars pressing forward in search of an equaliser. This, however, left them exposed at the back and finally in the 90th minute of the match Sundowns were able to find the second goal they so rightly deserved.

The man to grab the goal was substitute Mabhuti Khenyeza who clinically headed home a right wing cross to seal matters and Sundowns a 2-0 win on the night.

Well done guys.It is a good feeling to see ourselves in familiar territory @ number 1.Others will say it's early days but an early bird catches the fattest worm.I still mantain even if we go through the season without cups, big teams are judged on Championships.I am not saying we are going to win it yet,I onle plead for consistancy.

Good win last nite given the fact that P Stars always gives our tough everytime we play them. Yes its early days to talk about winning the league but if we keep on collecting points like we do now it will be much easier in the end.
$ky all the way!!!!!!!

I said yesterday, Grobler or no Grobler Stars were in for hiding..some joke here said Stars is hoodoo team....and I asked from our 14 meeting minus yesterday, they won only 4 times, and that qualifies them to be a hoodoo team...now we met 15 times , 7 wins as compared to 4 wins, are they still a hoodoo team? Guy where is Pelembe..injury or something?

Why was the coach replacing Nyandoro with a defender? Don't we have other midfielders besides Nyandoro and Pattison? Becvause Stars nearly equalized after this blander substitution! It was a good game overall especially in the first half, those silky touches and one twos were a joy to watch! Congratulation Sundowns..one game at a time!

Hey Sandawana, you're wrong, the league will be heading to Tswane for 6th seasons in a row. remeber Downs won it twice and SSU 3 times in the last 5 seasons, so its the 6th time in a row.

We won playing at 85% of our capacity, imagine when we hit 100%? Re Ja Joy ka Yellow.........!!!!!!!

On the issue of Pelembe, we really need an explanation from the coach. with all due respect to Cale, he is yet to convince me that he is a Downs material, he should make way for the one and the only Pele Pele Pelembe.

Shapa Sandawana Shapa.....!!!!!!!

We should have finished them off in the 1st half, however a win is a win. 6 out of 6 and 4goals (f) 0(a) is a good start. Stars' plan was stop Patty playing and they succeded but the Killer was there to punish. This is the only country in the world where a known killer is allowed to kill at will. Where is the General Bheki Cele. Mabhuti...that was a good flick on the sroke of time. Kudala besihlupha oDinaledi.

As long as cheeseboy is playing Sundowns will win. I watched Sundowns against Ajax without Cheeseboy, they struggled. Cheeseboy make Sundowns play. Krol cost us a lot here, we lost a damned good player.
