Downs come right against minnows

Posted: 18 April 2010 Time: 16:54

Mamelodi Sundowns came from a goal behind in the first half to eventually run out comfortable 3-1 winners against amateur side Island FC at the Ulundi Stadium on Sunday.

Lindani Zungu opened the scoring for the home side before Sundowns came back into it with a brace from Matti Pattison and one from Felix Katongo.

The side from Pretoria showed just how potent on attack they can be when Katongo broke clear of the home side’s defence in the first minute of play, but Island keeper Morena Lekhula came off his goal line in nick of time to deny the speedy winger.

Sundowns Manqoba Ngwenya was rather casual when James Mayinga picked him out with a well weighted cross after 20 mintues, the striker who was making his first start of the season fired a tepid attempt which failed to trouble Lekhula.

However, credit must be given to Island, who play in the Vodacom League, for not being overwhelmed by their more illustrious opponents.

There was no lack of commitment or effort on their part and it was hardly surprising when Island took the lead in the 23rd minute through a well taken goal from their striker Lindani Zungu who fired confidently after beating Sundowns off-side trap.

But the visitors flexed their muscles a minute before the half time whistle, when defensive midfielder Pattison leveled matters with a composed header from Katongo’s cross.

Sundowns looked to up the pace in second half, and by the hour mark they found the back of the net on two more occasions.

First Pattison completed his brace by rounding off with aplomb after being set up by an excellent through ball from his midfield partner, Esrom Nyandoro.

Then, Elias Pelembe located the unmarked Katongo in Island’s penalty area. Katongo responded by side footing his effort beyond a stranded Lekhula.

I've always said it our management (Mambush and Shakoane) are there for their own selfish reason. How can you fire a coach because he doesn't greet a certain employee.

How I wished for that Island side to whip our arse and didn't watch the game but was dissapointed with the score line. I was busy watching a very good game btwn Chiefs and SSU and Musona what a goal!!! The boy is a gem and me think he is ready for the overseas move look Messi is only 22 why not move him now???

I wish Sundowns to be relagated this coming season for the president to open his eyes. He has been fooled so many times how can you ask the players which coach do you have to employ??? The players must accept any coach a play according to what they get paid. Yellow One.

FOR CORRECTINON @Swai swai Island is from Nongoma not Ulundi the reason they play at ulundi is because of better facilities there.

Guys Stoikovich is very talented in as far as coaching is concerned but he does not come cheap imagine R750 000 per month and i mean he was earning big big moola. But he used trial and error system of coaching, he used same sguad for quite a long time, he relied too much on the same sguad, above all he nearly caused South Africa's right to host the world cup a questionable issue especially with his case of calling PSL corrupt, in a way of wanting his foreign lawyers to come here and help him and whaetver,

Remember that Sundowsn was robbed in that game against Moroka Swallows and Motsepe realised that this might be international news, If u know what i mean then u will understand. The sky.

Wonder is a true supporter, the management leaves alot 2 be desired and that always translates onto the field, i dnt see him as being negative cause when Downs did well he was behind them 100%..Management at Sundowns is bad...id say bring back Stoichkov and dismiss all the other fools who dnt knw what their role is...and im saying this as a South african football supporter

So Thoko and crew leave Wonder alone..i feel his pain lol!

You are very naive thinking that Sunflops play good soccer. Sundowns used to play good soccer and now they dont have a clue what they are doing, if you look at how they play they do not have a system or style that can be attached to them.

Management should just fire the president.

My friend everybody knows the PSL is corrupt how can you be so blind or is it bad because it was said by a foreigner??? The World Cup was long awarded I think 5 years ago how was Stoichkov going to cost South Africa the World Cup... by talking the truth??? Ace Ncobo said the same thing about the PSL but you kept quiet... WHY???

Motsepe said he wanted the best and he got one why throw it all away??? He said said he was willing to pay any amount for Sundowns to conquer Africa and he was happy about the contract with Skhova. You never brought this up while we were winning (the pay cheque)... WHY???
Get Real Ppl.

Oh my God!! Chiefs supporters!! They win Telkom Cup & they scream a lot of nonsense. They beat a depleted Sundowns Team by an odd goal & beat Pirates through lottery and then they are the best team in Mzansi! Then Downs mgt are incompentent! Hehehehe!!! A bunch of clowns

They have even forgotten that they are family run team! Sundowns mgmt are not the Motsepes as the case with the Motaungs!

You are correct, Chiefs is a family run team, run by the Khosi family.

And as for beating a "depleted" Sunflops team, you are right it was depleted cause they do not have depth.

Lotto? Penalties are part of the game and it was revealed that Piecity needed to practice them. We practice every part of the game.

Interesting points you raise and very true. It seems that people have selective memories.

Carlos Alberto Perrera refered to PSL soccer as table tennis. Watching it is like watching the Chappies Little League. No team is able to keep possession of the ball, it's all about "skop en donner" soccer. I'm surprised you guys find it exiting so much.

You must tell Carlos to watch Chiefs playing. We do not play skop and donner soccer. We play what we call fluid football, build up from defense, move to middle and then all attack. We keep the ball...watch our next practice match with FC Cape Town

Guys my point was that even though there is a thin line between being constructively critical and being utterly negative, some people are plain negative...We all can see that Downs management is incompetent, but when the team produces results, credit must be given...from what I saw yesterday Downs were playing freely and showed that they are in control. So it would have been difficult to see the best of the Mighty Downs because only the best oposition can bring the best out of every team....

I have spoken...

Pity some are using "our very own" as amunition against the mighty downs...I tell u Downs will always be up there...

I will say this for the last time...ONEZINDLEBE MAKEZWE...Sundowns did not fire Hristo, he resigned...seems like most of u know so mucu as KO can publish...the new contract offer was improved but there was a performance clause and behavoural conditions, which "the Dagger" did not dig, and he decided to leave..he knew he could not shut his mouth...Muhsin won cups with chimps but he was fired (note FIRED) and that was not performance-related. chimps saw themselves as the best team in mzansi even coming op with terms lake thathazonke or vat ales or whatever...but in his last spell Muhsin was fired and "beef steak" said "he is not good with players"...so leave downs to try and correct their wrongs...and critisise constructively for the sake of development of soccer in RSA...

I have spoken
