Downs close in on SuperSport

Posted: 10 February 2010 Time: 21:52

Mamelodi Sundowns cut the gap to Absa Premiership leaders SuperSport United to just three points thanks to a 1-0 victory over Platinum Stars at the Super Stadium on Wednesday evening.

A late goal from Surprise Moriri handed the Brazilians a victory that keeps them right on the tails of Matsatsantsa and they can draw level on points if they win their game in hand this coming weekend.

There were plenty of goal scoring opportunities early on, both from open play and set pieces, yet neither Brian Baloyi nor his counterpart Tapuwa Kapini were called upon to make any particularly challenging saves in the first 30 minutes.

Sundowns’ Esrom Nyandoro was desperately unlucky to see his 27th minute shot from just outside the penalty area rebound off the post with Stars’ keeper well beaten.

The Brazilians were again mere inches from taking the lead in the 40th minute when Elias Pelembe’s shot from close range hit the woodwork. It was the last clear scoring chance of the half, with the interval seeing the score locked at 0-0.

On 63 minutes Pelembe whipped a good cross into the Stars box from a free kick that found the head of Matthew Booth, but the tall centre back was unable to direct his header on target.

With just under 20 minutes to play ‘Downs introduced Surprise Moriri off the bench and it proved to be a turning point in the match, with the substitute getting on the end of James Mayinga’s cross to direct a header into the back of the net and hand the hosts a 75th minute lead.

On 82 minutes Stars so nearly drew level but Joseph Malongoane’s long range shot was turned away by Brian Baloyi, probably the best save he had to make on the night.

Three minutes later Moriri almost gave the Brazilians some breathing space with a shot from just inside the penalty area but Kapini tipped the ball over his bar to keep Dinaledi in the contest.

However, Sundowns held out for the victory and will head into this weekend’s game against Santos knowing that a win will put them level on points with their cross-town rivals at the league summit.

I enjoy listening to the Motaung's when they are being intervwd.
One thing they have learned,or is on thier lips is Sundowns.
"Because we don't have money like the Shoe Shine and Piano"
"Because we cannot pay that amount of money like the Brazillians"
"Because we don't have a natural venue like the Sky is the Limit"
Because thier President is refusing to Joing us...
If you can't beat them,...............?

Its one of those things when some fans says your team is pathetic and when you look last season and this season.....they have nothing to show.

KHOSI....we (KHOSI FAMILY) will have a good year. Yes the league is gone but I can assure you...we will have a silver ware this season and as for sundowns..........WATCH THE SPACE........0

Bafana bami, uma nilazi ibhola and nilibuka kahle (which u dont), you will statistically calculate that Sundowns is SA's most successful team ever since PSL inception in 1996, having won 5 league titles and making the African Champions League final in 2001. So do less talking and more reading, u morons. And besides, you can call us loudmouthed but at least we make a noise to our own pride. I dont see how that affects you, sinecala manje uma si-celebrata our own win. From my poin of view, it is you shit fans that are loudmouthed as you stick your noses in everyone's business. Imvamisa there are more comments from the Kaizer Shit fans than ours in our column. But u dont find our comments all over their column like siswele into yokwenza. Izinja vele ngeke zakhonkotha imoto emile.

A lot of people are saying Gavin Hunt is cocky, arrogant and has ego. I don't blame him, He has been the most successful coach in the PSL for the past 3 seasons. He is also the only coach to leave Black Leopards without being fired.

Here are the quotes that will help you understand Gavin's situation:
Hiphop Group Teargas on the song "Go away":
"They say I act funny. Umaune mali ungaenzani?"
Mohammed Ali:
"It ain't bragging if you can back it up".
