Downs close in on SuperSport

Posted: 10 February 2010 Time: 21:52

Mamelodi Sundowns cut the gap to Absa Premiership leaders SuperSport United to just three points thanks to a 1-0 victory over Platinum Stars at the Super Stadium on Wednesday evening.

A late goal from Surprise Moriri handed the Brazilians a victory that keeps them right on the tails of Matsatsantsa and they can draw level on points if they win their game in hand this coming weekend.

There were plenty of goal scoring opportunities early on, both from open play and set pieces, yet neither Brian Baloyi nor his counterpart Tapuwa Kapini were called upon to make any particularly challenging saves in the first 30 minutes.

Sundowns’ Esrom Nyandoro was desperately unlucky to see his 27th minute shot from just outside the penalty area rebound off the post with Stars’ keeper well beaten.

The Brazilians were again mere inches from taking the lead in the 40th minute when Elias Pelembe’s shot from close range hit the woodwork. It was the last clear scoring chance of the half, with the interval seeing the score locked at 0-0.

On 63 minutes Pelembe whipped a good cross into the Stars box from a free kick that found the head of Matthew Booth, but the tall centre back was unable to direct his header on target.

With just under 20 minutes to play ‘Downs introduced Surprise Moriri off the bench and it proved to be a turning point in the match, with the substitute getting on the end of James Mayinga’s cross to direct a header into the back of the net and hand the hosts a 75th minute lead.

On 82 minutes Stars so nearly drew level but Joseph Malongoane’s long range shot was turned away by Brian Baloyi, probably the best save he had to make on the night.

Three minutes later Moriri almost gave the Brazilians some breathing space with a shot from just inside the penalty area but Kapini tipped the ball over his bar to keep Dinaledi in the contest.

However, Sundowns held out for the victory and will head into this weekend’s game against Santos knowing that a win will put them level on points with their cross-town rivals at the league summit.

A MEMORANDUM CIRCULATED AMONG ALL KAIZER CHIEFS SUPPORTERS BRANCHES:
"Please be aware that we as a team uphold quality standards, hence our need to pull together as a team as the season comes to a close. We have thus taken a decision to support Supersport United both at stadia and in football forums as a principle. The reason for this is that we hate Mamelodi Sundowns FC which is the nearest to winning the league. Even though this is your own choice, you are encouraged to wear Supersport colours, carry it's flags and display them at the stadium when the team plays, but you should give these away or burn them after Supersport are crowned league champions. In the event that Sundowns win the league trophy, you are reminded of our agreement as fans to commit mass suicide happily knowing that the Kaizer Chiefs funeral scheme will bury us and take care of of our families afterwards"

Guys Im not a sundowns.Infact I hate Sundowns with a passion.I hate anything that associates itself with sundowns.I dumped my ex girlfriend because she was a sundowns fan.I hate Moriri and co.But I do wish they could win the league.

Gavin Hunt has an ego that he needs to be brought down to mother earth. He's ego is getting bigger by the day and someone needs to do something about it.Unfortunately my team cant do anything about it as we are out of the title race.

So as much as I hate Sundowns I will humble myself and put my money were my mouth isnt and hope they do me that favour. So yes I will say it Shapaaaaaa Masandawana shapaaaaa

I honestly think pirates deserves to have a loud mouth aswell because the over fried chips fans have been talking as if their better than pirates but now guess what pirates need 3pts to be above them (over fried chips) which they will be after their Derby match and that proofs that as poor as how pirates played this season also the over fried chips have played the same this season or maybe Chips still thinks they can win the Pretoria League heheehee... Anyway we all know now that the Pirates supporters are not as over fried as chips fans…. Thank God the sky is the limit…….

Indeed if wishes were horses beggars will ride. The voting system cannot work this time for cheats. Now we are are starting to hear cries Like I WISH s'sport can rap this up to save us the agony. Truly speaking Downs deserve to win this league more than S'sport. I mean this is the only club which is yet to loose the game this second round and on their way they beat S'sport, Bugs and Cheats. And remember if you check the league standings these clubs are top four. So Cheats deny it or accept it but that is what will happen.

Something is really wrong in SA. Clubs with 10 supporters have the best players, they are now contesting the league whilst clubs that bring less revenue are the ones contesting. But our time is coming Khosis, we'll wallop some guys. By the way, when last has sunflops won anything. One might be mistaken they have been on top, and cording to them , they have won this years league, wait till some stupid gungus eat the humble pie full of worms, nxxx

Shower-Cap man: So far so busy Sir. After attending two soccer matches yesterday, I went straight to do my shift at Nanana night club, this now I am busy printing expiry date tags for the shop…
Msibi (presenter): It looks like you are a very busy man indeed. I see you in almost every PSL game, like you are saying you attended two games last night. Exactly which team do you support?
Shower-Cap man: You see now, you are spoiling my mood.
Msibi (presenter): Just name the team Sir
Shower-Cap man: Sir, I will treat this call as a missed call. Good bye
