Downs close in on SuperSport

Posted: 10 February 2010 Time: 21:52

Mamelodi Sundowns cut the gap to Absa Premiership leaders SuperSport United to just three points thanks to a 1-0 victory over Platinum Stars at the Super Stadium on Wednesday evening.

A late goal from Surprise Moriri handed the Brazilians a victory that keeps them right on the tails of Matsatsantsa and they can draw level on points if they win their game in hand this coming weekend.

There were plenty of goal scoring opportunities early on, both from open play and set pieces, yet neither Brian Baloyi nor his counterpart Tapuwa Kapini were called upon to make any particularly challenging saves in the first 30 minutes.

Sundowns’ Esrom Nyandoro was desperately unlucky to see his 27th minute shot from just outside the penalty area rebound off the post with Stars’ keeper well beaten.

The Brazilians were again mere inches from taking the lead in the 40th minute when Elias Pelembe’s shot from close range hit the woodwork. It was the last clear scoring chance of the half, with the interval seeing the score locked at 0-0.

On 63 minutes Pelembe whipped a good cross into the Stars box from a free kick that found the head of Matthew Booth, but the tall centre back was unable to direct his header on target.

With just under 20 minutes to play ‘Downs introduced Surprise Moriri off the bench and it proved to be a turning point in the match, with the substitute getting on the end of James Mayinga’s cross to direct a header into the back of the net and hand the hosts a 75th minute lead.

On 82 minutes Stars so nearly drew level but Joseph Malongoane’s long range shot was turned away by Brian Baloyi, probably the best save he had to make on the night.

Three minutes later Moriri almost gave the Brazilians some breathing space with a shot from just inside the penalty area but Kapini tipped the ball over his bar to keep Dinaledi in the contest.

However, Sundowns held out for the victory and will head into this weekend’s game against Santos knowing that a win will put them level on points with their cross-town rivals at the league summit.

I have to say it has always been a wonderful feeling to be a Sundowns supporter and yesterday evening the players gave me lots of goose bumps the way they played. But the funny thing this morning was the Colleague of mine who is a over fried chips fan who yesterday said he wants sundowns to loose but this morning he congratulated my ayooooooba downs team with a very saw heart because to me it was something against his wishes. Always the Sky is the limit…..

The silent assassin (Moriri) is back indeed! The Chempanzees are going to have some heart attacks. After their fake zims have been shown the door with 5 games to go...their consolation Holy Water team also seems to be there for a taking.

Boys we are proud of you...a few months ago you were sitting 9/10th on the log!!!

To Pirates, well done to you too, take your rightful position (3rd) as zim cheaps will collect 3 points, at maximum from the last 3 games.

Sondowns is blessed to have a Killer(Mphela), assassin (Moriri), general(Nyandoro),Bomber (Pelembe),Stopper (young Xulu) and tireless horse (Khanyeza)and of course a coach who has played football at the highest level...not bus drivers.

My observations this morning:
1. Football is played on a soccer field, not a fottball forum. Take note Pearl and your cronies.
2. There is an abject shortage of comments from those h.o.m.o.sexuals from naturena this morning.
3. This is one of the most interesting seasons- and we are enjoying it!
4. Siwelele won, Downs won, and The Bugs won. Who's complaining except those mofos from Naturena?

As much as I love to hear a nicely tuned choir, I also like to giggle when someone sings out of tune... I pray that the regular haters did not commit suicide last night, I'm so Christian, I prayer for my enemy. So please, where ever you at, I'm worried, give us a sign that you okay, even a cough will do... Pearl, Thabang,BrokenFan and your fans

Its one of those things when some fans says your team is pathetic and when you look last season and this season.....they have nothing to show.

KHOSI....we (KHOSI FAMILY) will have a good year. Yes the league is gone but I can assure you...we will have a silver ware this season and as for sundowns..........WATCH THE SPACE........0

MEANWHILE AT NATURENA, THE EX-CLUB CHAIRMAN RECEIVES A "PLEASE CALL JUNIOR" CALLBACK:
Chairman: Hello son, how are you?
Junior: Not so good papa.
Chairman: Why, what's wrong?
Junior: Papa, ever since you resigned, I'm not playing regularly. I'm forever on the bench papa and I don't like it.
Chairman: Sorry to hear that son, but there's nothing I can do.
Junior: Papa, speak to Bobby. It's your team after all!
Chairman: Ok son, let me tell you something you haven't heard, and keep it secret. I didn't resign....
Junior: WHAT?!
Chairman: Ja, I was fired. My own flesh and blood fired me. I don't have a say anymore. I see my team going to the dogs and I can't do anything about it.
Junior: But papa can't you do anything?
Chairman: Like what? I'm broke because I didn't sell him the team, and all I can do is appear to support him in the papers.
Junior: Eish papa this is bad indeed.
Chairman: Another secret son. I'm speaking to Patrice so he can hire Jessica because Bobby will probably fire her come end of season. I tell you son, I don't recognise this team anymore.
Junior: This is bad papa really. I don't know what to say.
Chairman: Ja now you know (*your airtime has run out and your call has been terminated. Goodbye*)
Junior: Papa. Are you there papa? Eish. What am I gonna do?
