Celtic and Sundowns end goalless

Posted: 3 February 2010 Time: 21:28

Mabhuti Khenyeza cost Mamelodi Sundowns three points as they drew 0-0 with Bloemfontein Celtic at the Super Stadium, getting himself sent off for attempting to hit a Lebohang Mokoena cross with his hand after he had already been previously cautioned.

That sending off was crucial as it meant that Sundowns, who were very much on the attack, lacked the extra body up front that could have helped them turn one of their many opportunities home. The game ended goalless.

Celtic, though, were unfortunate not to have won the game as they were on the end of some incorrect refereeing decisions, most notably when they should have been awarded what was a legitimate goal on 77 minutes after Thembile Kanono’s shot rifled onto the Sundowns crossbar and bounced down over the line. However, the goal was not awarded.

Sundowns got an early scare when Celtic winger Tlou Segolela used his speed to get away from their defence and squared the ball towards team mate Excellent Walaza, who could not get to the ball but neither did Sundowns keeper Brian Baloyi.

The Sundowns keeper had to track to the back post where Cecil Oerson came sliding in; he managed to get a touch to the ball but hit it into the side netting.

Three minutes after that Celtic defender Matoho made a hash of what should have been a regulation clearance on the edge of his own 18-yard area. The ball fell to Katlego Mphela, who moved the ball forward and fired towards goal.

Somehow, and miraculously so, Celtic keeper Patrick Tignyemb managed to get a hand to the ball and punched it up into the air. As the ball fell back into play, Khenyeza got to the ball ahead of Goldstone and blasted the ball at the keeper, who blocked it with his legs.

Five minutes before half time Sundowns were dealt a major blow when Khenyeza, who had earlier picked up a yellow card, attempted to hit Mokoena’s cross from the right with his hand. Referee Charl Theron reached for his top pocket and flashed a red card at Khenyeza, who put his team under unnecessary pressure by getting a needless second yellow card.

Sundowns were not playing like they were a man down and constantly troubled the Celtic defence. Twenty minutes from the end Esrom Nyandoro sent the ball from the right to Mphela, who did brilliantly well to bring the ball under control before pushing past Matoho and it took a brave Tignyemb to come out and stop the ball at the feet of the striker.

Celtic had a goal by Oerson disallowed in the 75th minute as Walaza was judged to be in an off side position. That seemed to spur them on into and in the 77th minute substitute Kanono struck the ball from 20 yards out over Baloyi and it hit the underside of the wood work and bounced behind the line, but the referee did not award the goal.

I don't believe hore any team is bribing any referee. It is purely their incompetencies and any team can benefit at any given time from pure refereeing. But the problem is they happen so often that it becomes a circus. This referees department really needs a serious attention...

KALI the shower cap you wear to every function (Soccer matches, stokvels, Church, etc) cannot cover up the CRIME we saw last night, let alone cover the fact that you're a CIRCUS fan.

And the funny thing is, they want to kill Mr. Theron! I asked them and they didn't answer, does this mean Mr. Demon has been bribed endless times by Cheaps?

We respect you as a former player, but couldn't you rather go coach your neighbourhood under-6 team or something?

Its surprising that now you come out and ask questions. The last time I checked when you guys said chiefs robbed santos, you said all this shit about chiefs and Bobby bribing refs

Just cos sundowns benefited, you dont want to admit the fact that celtics were hard done but you come out with silly questions like......

""Does that mean Jerome Demon has been bribed by Cheaps and by Egypt? Just asking....

What the fuuck is that????

To u SBUSISO,Franco&Meshack i won't begin to reply to u,except to just say u're the living proof of what i think of all South African Soccer Fans! When u read other people's comments u turn ur computers or phone screens up side down.Once u do that u'll always lack understanding of what the others are saying.I still maintain that Sundowns weren't embarrassed by Celtics for a team that played with 10 man for that long.So boys go back to my comments&read them properly not upside down.

You've hit the nail on the head. Fortunately, with time you'll learn not to take such people seriously. Whenever their team plays badly, they take out their emotions on other teams. They are a shrink's dream, such emotion, such anger!

I read your comments but refrained from responding mainly because I don’t think you were watching the game last night. If you did, you would not mention: “Playing with 10 man for that long n still our opponents fail to break us down”
Your opponents managed to break you down on two clear occasions but were failed by the ref and his assistant. So before you comment get your facts right. You should have said: “Playing with 10 men for that long, our opponents managed to break us down 2 times but were failed by the refs” And by 2 times am not including that clear penalty, I am referring to 2 goals scored.

Most of the teams drew...thus taking us back to square one....on the real there was no excitement from these games (coming from the break)...so if you understand football then you will realise that...but Sorry for sum of us, it's never that way: one of the reasons why this facility is a learning and informative one....glad I can make a difference....Sundowns still on the campaign for taking the Pretoria Cup...but let they say, sum will be there to accompany others..imagine a Pretoria League with only two clubs....would actually be very, very boring..BUT with million grants a year...ukupheleza is always worth it,,for the other remaining teams....
