Celtic and Sundowns end goalless

Posted: 3 February 2010 Time: 21:28

Mabhuti Khenyeza cost Mamelodi Sundowns three points as they drew 0-0 with Bloemfontein Celtic at the Super Stadium, getting himself sent off for attempting to hit a Lebohang Mokoena cross with his hand after he had already been previously cautioned.

That sending off was crucial as it meant that Sundowns, who were very much on the attack, lacked the extra body up front that could have helped them turn one of their many opportunities home. The game ended goalless.

Celtic, though, were unfortunate not to have won the game as they were on the end of some incorrect refereeing decisions, most notably when they should have been awarded what was a legitimate goal on 77 minutes after Thembile Kanono’s shot rifled onto the Sundowns crossbar and bounced down over the line. However, the goal was not awarded.

Sundowns got an early scare when Celtic winger Tlou Segolela used his speed to get away from their defence and squared the ball towards team mate Excellent Walaza, who could not get to the ball but neither did Sundowns keeper Brian Baloyi.

The Sundowns keeper had to track to the back post where Cecil Oerson came sliding in; he managed to get a touch to the ball but hit it into the side netting.

Three minutes after that Celtic defender Matoho made a hash of what should have been a regulation clearance on the edge of his own 18-yard area. The ball fell to Katlego Mphela, who moved the ball forward and fired towards goal.

Somehow, and miraculously so, Celtic keeper Patrick Tignyemb managed to get a hand to the ball and punched it up into the air. As the ball fell back into play, Khenyeza got to the ball ahead of Goldstone and blasted the ball at the keeper, who blocked it with his legs.

Five minutes before half time Sundowns were dealt a major blow when Khenyeza, who had earlier picked up a yellow card, attempted to hit Mokoena’s cross from the right with his hand. Referee Charl Theron reached for his top pocket and flashed a red card at Khenyeza, who put his team under unnecessary pressure by getting a needless second yellow card.

Sundowns were not playing like they were a man down and constantly troubled the Celtic defence. Twenty minutes from the end Esrom Nyandoro sent the ball from the right to Mphela, who did brilliantly well to bring the ball under control before pushing past Matoho and it took a brave Tignyemb to come out and stop the ball at the feet of the striker.

Celtic had a goal by Oerson disallowed in the 75th minute as Walaza was judged to be in an off side position. That seemed to spur them on into and in the 77th minute substitute Kanono struck the ball from 20 yards out over Baloyi and it hit the underside of the wood work and bounced behind the line, but the referee did not award the goal.

OMG, did we just witness a club being denied two clear goals, a possible penalty or a free kick in the dangerous area? To top it all, I was more surprised by the reaction of dagama after the game, contrary to expectation, he was not scathing. Why??? has he been promised anything by the floppers?? Being robbed and you are cool with that, fuck the thang of the "Ref is also human" after three glaring mistakes and add to that how floppers were kicking celtics players in front of the man in the middle and nothing happening?? Ku khona ku sha manzi here or whatever they say.One just wonders had it been Chiefs being favoured, the wjhole country would be abuzz with we-waz- robbed stories/complaints. I urge Celtics management to investigate this Da gama coach of theirs, something doesn't add up here. And one that takes the cake, Thabiso Tema, as much as he said the celtics were robbed, but he was very soft in saying that, watch that man and his sidekick William Shongwe when Chiefs seems to get a slight favour from the referees how quickly they forget they are supposed to be impartial.

So boys u gonna be fighting over this issue over n over as if is the 1st time we see something like this?Get over your selves n move on from this bcoz ref's decision is final. That Ref assistant needs to suspended for his incompitant performance on the night.People talk of Downs being out the race,no they are wrong. The status-quo is still the same as before we're re-opened.I hope Hristo will fine Khenyeza half his salary for costing the team two points. For me,the Ref&Khenyeza were those two main problems on the night.Thanx to both teams for a good performance than the bore we watched in Angola.

Some people that comment here really make me wonder whether South Africans are really normal or too emotional?Just a few weeks ago Hristo was the best thing since white bread,bt suddenly some people are insinuating that he's not good bcos he ain't picked their favourites. The introduction of Lerato was a great tectical change taking his pace&the match situation into consideration.Sundowns had to rely on counter attacks hence the coach introduced Lerato.Yes that didn't bring us results but people u gotta learn to watch the whole game not only when the ball hits the back of the net like many South Africans tend to do.Some are talking of Downs being lucky, coz all they focused on is the goal that never counted,bt what about the many saves the Celtics keeper did?How many shots on target did Celtics had as compared to us?Learn to watch the game properly&stop being emotional about it,it's just a sport after all.

Mr Theron was a piece of shit lastnite but anyway downs don't need that point. I'm glad Siwelele fans didn't burn or throw shit stuff in the stadium. If it was two clubs from soweto who always win cups through the middle man and votes we would be talking different laugage.

Playing with 10 man for that long n still our opponents fail to break us down is a great achievement for our team.To achieve that is not an easy thing&for me it wasn't only about the goals but the team effort that i saw out there that made me hopeful that our team has a great chance of winning this Pretoria Soccer Lig.The boys fought for each other under difficult circumstances. It was easy for me to see that our coach is the great one coz he didn't panic by making changes after that red card. That would've broken the team's momentum. This team showed lastnyt that they're a well oiled machine. Now that Khenyeza is out, watchout for Suprise Moriri in Cape Town!!!

Well done masele. We should have won that game. Well done coach for keeping a cool head about it.

You were clearly disappointed but making noise about it would not have chaged the result.

"Do not underestimate the power of ounces of gold"

hahahaha... 2 clear goals and a penalty. Even the heartless Issa Hayatou would have allowed at least one. I agree ounces are too powerful.

Who are the really cheaters now. Sundowns bribe the BB coach to call up all this bunch of players and when it comes to their team, they lack discipline.

Good thing for spotting that one, would you agree with me when i say.It is the corrupt referees not the teams that officiate games.

The fact here is.
When Chiefs receive favours from these corrupt referees it is called BRIBERY.
When any other team gets them it is called HUMAN ERROR.

BULL SHIT !!!!!!

Listen you zim cheap donkeys: here the are facts:the Booth incident was way (about a metre) outside the box so it warrents no discussion. 2. On the offside incident: when a final shot was taken 2 Celtic players were on an offside position (not offside), as the ball went past them Walaza played a dummy thereby interferring with play.....correct decision by the assistant.

Finally the rocket by Kanono: when the ball hit the ground ,looks there was dust(rising up) from powder marking the goal -line which means a small fraction of the ball hit the goal line. IF this was the case it cant be a goal. If not then the officials and 90% of celtic players missed it. It was so fast.

Hehehe its interesting that masters of cheating are making the MOST noise.
