Sundowns beat 10-man Wits

Posted: 8 December 2009 Time: 21:51

A goal by Katlego Mphela in the second half helped Mamelodi Sundowns beat 10-man Bidvest Wits 1-0 at the Super Stadium on Tuesday night.

Wits have now gone without a win in 12 matches after Mphela's headed goal, a 57th minute red card for captain Tefu Mashamaite and a disallowed first half effort by Kadi sealed their fate.

Sundowns struggled in the first half with little cohesiveness despite edging the position over Wits who were more direct and quick with their attacking.

In truth, there was little excitement in the opening 45 minutes as the home side seemed content to sit back and allow their visitors to come at them.

The Clever Boys did have the ball in Downs' net in the 19th minute but the goal was disallowed when Mark Haskins beat the offside trap, rounded keeper Brian Baloyi but instead of going for goal, Haskins then passed to Calvin Kadi who netted into an empty net but was ruled offside by referee Victor Hlungwani on the insistence of his assistant Stephen Moshotle. The call looked marginal.

The Students kept up the pressure throughout the opening half but couldn't get the goal to break the a 0-0 scoreline – which remained until half-time.

In the second half, Katlego Mphela failed to capitalise on a goalkeeping mistake from Wits teenager Darren Keet in the 52nd minute.

The tide of the match turned for goal in the 57th minute though. The Students' skipper and defensive lynchpin Mashamaite was shown a straight red card by referee Hlungwani after the defender pulled down Mphela who was racing for goal and was moving into a goal-scoring position.

Two minutes later Keet produced a tremendous save to deny Downs hard working midfielder anchorman Matthew Pattison a goal when he tipped Pattison's goal bound shot over his crossbar.

From that moment on the pressure from Sundowns on Wits became relentless, despite Wits' coach Roger de Sa attempting to reshape his team with tactical substitutions.

The pressure finally told six minutes from time when Mphela brought his goal tally in the league to 13. He headed home Pelembe's 84th minute corner to give Downs three valuable points and keep them in the title race.

Yah ne. Since it's the Pretoria Soccer League team that has won people know how to protect the ref and not talk about the bribery. It's nice, We khosis do not have a problem with that for we know on the 19th, some people are going to cry foul and blame the bribery. Enjoy while it lasts guys. The truth be told Wits deserved something out of this dull fixture, they were simply hard done. Those who say that goal was offside need to study (for they cannot practise that) the offside rule and look closely to the Wits move. Anyway congrats until you blame the refs and bribery without evidence. The 19th December. I guess it is scary downs supporters eh?

Gauteng Traffic Police Pattison should shot to kill you to take man of the match and player of the month award. I guess i have answered your question my brother. Otherwise I thought you hate him. The last time I checked you guys were crying that he be benched and Papi be given the starting berth, now its a different tune. This is the problem with so many coaches for a single team.

That's the Circus for you. If they can't win straight they go for Plan B [Bribe]. If it was not for Plan B our refs would be fit in shape today. If you saw that lines man last night you could tell his overweight tummy has got something to do with bribery money from the circus. He was even laughing when raising that flag.nxx

"Gauteng Traffic Police"! How did you get that name my brother? I guess it does not have to do with you being a police man. If you are then you'll not make sense out of what the diplomatic Dikotsi said. Otherwise it is simple english and clear to any literate man. Come on guys Santos was robbed we never denied that and we said since we are not refs they should be asked what they were doing. We had our three points. You too should admit that you were dealt a favour, either mistekenly or purposely by the ref. Not the end of the road as yet. The 19th, you'll reach the dead end of the road. Prepare the excuses guys. Trophies won controversially, they be sabtracted, the ref was bribed and the linesmen, this team was lucky jsut to give you a few.

SKYE, what's my girlfriend's got to do with my commenting on Kick Off forum moron.? I just said it and you confirmed it, you are so illogical and you have just proven it. I am not mentioning people's fathers, mothers, sisters, brothers or even boyfriends/girlfriends names when i comment here. I know where to draw the like. But illogical punks like you (who cannot argue without insulting) will always resort to insults when trying to put their weightless arguments across. You are stupid and I am not going to blame your parents.

to the shoot to kill g's, there is no way you can kill a chiefs with a single bullet. Come the 19th the chiefs will be doing 3x what you will be doing. If you do't score the score board will be 0-0, but if mphela puta one in, Nale, Nhleko, Josta will both put 1-in and if Khanyeza decide to stop missing and adds to Mphela's then Tshaba, Yeye, and Motaung/Musona will also add to the first three goals to make a 6-2 win 4 the Chiefs

Khosis, what do you think of this Sundowns supporters/fans. I think it has to do with them being fans without cards. If they were supporters they would be fair and point out that they were lucky to collect the maximum points on offer last night. Otherwise they would have been on a draw. You have won its true but the Wits goal has some controversy. It is just like ours with Santos which was a goal. There was not even a hand ball there but a legitimate goal. The 19th, Kea utlwa kea tshaba.
