Sundowns beat 10-man Wits

Posted: 8 December 2009 Time: 21:51

A goal by Katlego Mphela in the second half helped Mamelodi Sundowns beat 10-man Bidvest Wits 1-0 at the Super Stadium on Tuesday night.

Wits have now gone without a win in 12 matches after Mphela's headed goal, a 57th minute red card for captain Tefu Mashamaite and a disallowed first half effort by Kadi sealed their fate.

Sundowns struggled in the first half with little cohesiveness despite edging the position over Wits who were more direct and quick with their attacking.

In truth, there was little excitement in the opening 45 minutes as the home side seemed content to sit back and allow their visitors to come at them.

The Clever Boys did have the ball in Downs' net in the 19th minute but the goal was disallowed when Mark Haskins beat the offside trap, rounded keeper Brian Baloyi but instead of going for goal, Haskins then passed to Calvin Kadi who netted into an empty net but was ruled offside by referee Victor Hlungwani on the insistence of his assistant Stephen Moshotle. The call looked marginal.

The Students kept up the pressure throughout the opening half but couldn't get the goal to break the a 0-0 scoreline – which remained until half-time.

In the second half, Katlego Mphela failed to capitalise on a goalkeeping mistake from Wits teenager Darren Keet in the 52nd minute.

The tide of the match turned for goal in the 57th minute though. The Students' skipper and defensive lynchpin Mashamaite was shown a straight red card by referee Hlungwani after the defender pulled down Mphela who was racing for goal and was moving into a goal-scoring position.

Two minutes later Keet produced a tremendous save to deny Downs hard working midfielder anchorman Matthew Pattison a goal when he tipped Pattison's goal bound shot over his crossbar.

From that moment on the pressure from Sundowns on Wits became relentless, despite Wits' coach Roger de Sa attempting to reshape his team with tactical substitutions.

The pressure finally told six minutes from time when Mphela brought his goal tally in the league to 13. He headed home Pelembe's 84th minute corner to give Downs three valuable points and keep them in the title race.

dont be a fool that was offiside , even the wits player was interfering with play before Kadi can score

let me tell u something players knows the rule and they did not run to the referee and acts like fools because one of their teamamate should have not participated in play

and we wre denied a penalty in the box a man handled the ball in the box and referee turned a blind eye

Get over it *

Sundowns is the Goldden Boys of Pretoria

Sundowns have the Best Squad in the League

We are ready to conquer Pretoria nad africa after alll the League belongs to the Pretoria Sides

Some Journalist from Russia asked a spectator why is there so much victory menataliy within the Tshwane Base sports teams

He asked the Bulls ,Super Sion Sport and Mamelodi Downs

and he was told that we are shielding the legacy and making sure that everything stays within the Capital city

u go to Italy -a Milan team or Rome wins the tropy because they are protecting the legacy of the capital city

U go to engaland - a london Team wins trophy for the same above reason

U go Spain- A madrid or Barcelona team dominate football because of the same above

U go to Russia- a team from Moscow dominate their football

U go 2 Germany - a Munich te am do the same

U go to Brazil. the de je Niro side do exactly the same

so why must it be different from South Afriac
Pretoria Rules Period

Wits was cheated by the man in the middle, that was a goal no two ways about it! The circus team manage to score a single goal against 10 men! Media is very bias or maybe I must say Kaizer Chiefs is too big for RSA media cause everytime they are involved there is so much publicity but some ordinary teams like sunflops will always look at KC left overs so as media publicity!
