Chiefs sink Maritzburg United

Posted: 6 December 2009 Time: 18:45

Goals from Jimmy Jambo and Abia Nale in the closing minutes helped Kaizer Chiefs post a 3-1 win over Maritzburg United at the Moses Mabhida Stadium.

This match between the two sides was billed as a grudge match after Maritzburg beat Chiefs 1-0 at the Orlando Stadium in the first round.

Chiefs started like a house on fire with their wide men, Abia Nale and Siphiwe Tshabalala attacking the United defence.

Against the run of play, the home side got their first chance to score in the 21st minute, when their striker Fadlu Davids hit a tame shot at Ithumuleng Khune.

The Chiefs goalkeeper showed signs of rustiness a minute later when he left his goal line to block Felix Obada's threathening run into his area but failed to stop the wingers' progress. As a result, Obada picked out Davids with a cross but the striker failed to keep his header on target.

The Amakhosi opened the scoring when Nale went on a surging run down the right flank and eventually squared a ball into the path of Nkosinathi Nhleko who side-footed past Shu-Aib Walters, making his debut in the Maritzburg goals.

The home team equaliser came from nowhere when Musa Nyatama ran straight through the middle of Chiefs defence to level matters two minutes before the interval.

With the heat taking its toll on the players, the tempo of the match decreased in the second half. Rudolph Bester hit the Chiefs crossbar with the a thunderous shot in the 63rd minute.

But it was Chiefs who went ahead when Jambo scored in the 82nd minute when he ran onto a well weighted pass from Jose Torrealba who came on as a substitute in these second half. The wingback fired home from a tight angle.

Nale put the contest beyond doubt when he ran past a static Maritzburg defence and stabbed the ball past Walters, two minute from the end.

At the press conference after the match, Middendorp conceded that his men lost concentration at the vital stage and this is what caused them to leve empty handed.

VV has beaten two former Chiefs Machine draws Coaches i.e. Muhsin and Middendorp...what an irony and 3 goals each nogal....VV must just beat Sundowns and Pirates even thpough we don't win the league...i think for his first season on Mzansi that will be sufficient.....!

When a child is born we asked god and the ancestors to bless and protect the child against evil spirits. That is what Kaiser and his friends did when they form the team and named it chiefs. As the pacesetters, they are going to make history come end of the season to be the 1st and only team to be at the bottom of the league beginning of the season and topping the league end of season. Shakes said chiefs is going to win the league the smash and grab style.

Referees and their assistants need to learn and understand the offside rule. Sehloho scored a beautiful goal and it was ruled out for offside. SAFA please do something.

Absolutely shocking organisation of the seating in the stadium for this match! Most of the stewards were not doing their jobs, in fact they were doing nothing at all. Off the field and behind the scenes it was chaos. We have a lot to improve on for World Cup...

Let me admit, i was one of the chiefs fans that were'nt overly happy with Nhleko's inclusion in the squad. Im eating a humble pie as it is. The man has improved a lot,he holds and distributes the ball very well and of late his position has improved very well. I think he should be grafted into the bafana team

Ntokozo i'm with you there...i was at the stadium izolo and i realised (again) how MASSIVE Chiefs is! it was a MU home game but we totally outnumbered, outscreamed, outplayed, out-whatever-you-may-think them! Now i understand what that tall dude wabafana bestlaela (Booth) meant about Mexico and the 90 000 Vuvuzelas....IT'S INTIMIDATING! IT'S ON.
The organisation estadium was not so great. They should assign seat numbers for these local games as well- this thing of assigning sections is not easy to enforce when people start moving inside the stadium. other than that- it was a beautiful Durban day, beautiful stadium and the beautiful AmaKhosi...SHAPA....
