Downs win Tshwane Derby

Posted: 22 December 2009 Time: 21:26

Mamelodi Sundowns have ensured the League title race will go down to the wire after beating SuperSport United 1-0 in the Tshwane Derby at Loftus Versfeld on Tuesday night.

After dominating a goalless first half, Downs finally got their goal on the hour-mark when Luvengo Mungomeni rose highest to flick Elias Pelembe’s free-kick past Denis Onyango.

SuperSport completely dominated after that and missed a number of chances, though Brian Baloyi and Co deserve a lot of credit for some resolute defending.

The Brazilians started the first half like they had something to prove, with Franklin Cale and Pelembe causing havoc down the flanks.

Despite an early chance for Glen Salmon which hit the side-netting, it was all Sundowns. Mabhuti Khenyeza should have put his side ahead midway through the half after being played in by Katlego Mphela, but Onyango pulled off a fine save to deny the striker.

Hlompo Kekana and Daine Klate both had shots from the edge of the area which went wide, before Mphela’s left-footed curler from 20 yards out shaved the upright.

Gavin Hunt’s decision to replace the struggling Phelani Mpangase with Letladi Madubanya seemed to do the trick for United, who completely dominated after the break.

Klate found space in the area, but his weak shot trickled just wide, while Jabulani Maluleke, Brent Carelse and Madubanya tested Baloyi, who looked unbeatable on the ground, but was very suspect with any crosses into the area.

Then, on 59 minutes and completely against the run of play, Sundowns took the lead. Pelembe’s curling free-kick found Mungomeni, who rose highest to flick past Onyango.

The goal spurred SuperSport into action, but somehow they could just not get the ball in the back of the net. Baloyi pulled of a brilliant save to keep out Klate’s close-range drive, while Mungomeni cleared off the line with substitute Dario Monteiro waiting to tap home.

And with just minutes to go, Matthew Booth produced a world-class tackle to stop Bongani Khumalo’s goalbound shot, ensuring Sundowns the win – and the title race going down to the wire.

WE HAVE BEATEN THE SO CALLED BIG TEAMS IN THE PSL; we have a valid reason on celebrating this festive season with a broad smile (Tiger Wood's smile)...To Downs Organisers: what a team our coach has assembled, no magic really but dedication and commitment is just unbelievable: Now what they are going to do is hope that we lose and funny cos they might lose too, but hey it's okay to dream: my year has been a wonderful year as a Downs organiser, and I started my celebrations when we beat Mpumalanga Aces in the first round and still celebrating (it won't end,actually)..For what I have set as a standard for our team it already has been achieved: maybe some of our fans are still looking and hoping for more (nothing wrong with that),,but four points out of six..against Chiefs, Pirates and Supersports is just a red flag that hey put Faith, Dream Big and ask God to fulfill your dreams....Mr President though it's not over yet but we are definately heading for greater things at Chloorkop....Our Heavenly Father is a provider and (deep down in our hearts) Mr Motsepe you mosdef a provider for our brothers,,,,it's not actually wasting or spending money but PROVIDING..and Downs Has been blessed for that...We are two days from celebrating the birthday of Jesus Christ of Nazareth and Downs fans will be the happiest fans amongst the PSL teams..and for that: We thank the Almighty for making us believe that through the trials and tribulations...only Faith can yield positive results.....Well done MaSundawana amahle...and I'm just speechless....to all the Boys who don the Downs jersey...You have made us proud: we can't pay your back for what you did: THE SKY IS THE LIMIT !!!....KINGS OF TSWANE FOR 2009/2010 SEASON....MAMELODI SUNDOWNS...

The Game: 2009-12-23 13:34

You've said a mouthful & i totally agree with u. it's been a long time since we've felt this good. Stoichkov was a hot-head as a player but he's managed to behave himself so far & moulded a strong-willed united team hungry for success. i remember him employing defensive tactics during our 1st round game against Bucs & we were all up in arms but retrospectively i think he was protecting his players from a possible drubbing as Bucs had already peaked then (how things have changed now). i know we haven't won anything....yet but after Trott, Ted, Michel et al, i believe we are on the right track. the most refreshing thing for me is the fact that no one is played out of position & that the coach almost always starts with 2 strikers. every player gets a chance to impress & if you don't utilise your chances then someone will be played ahead of you. it is with this in mind that i think Zothwane & Khenyeza need to pull up their sock.

Enjoy the festive season & all the best wishes for 2010!!!!!!!!
