Downs win Tshwane Derby

Posted: 22 December 2009 Time: 21:26

Mamelodi Sundowns have ensured the League title race will go down to the wire after beating SuperSport United 1-0 in the Tshwane Derby at Loftus Versfeld on Tuesday night.

After dominating a goalless first half, Downs finally got their goal on the hour-mark when Luvengo Mungomeni rose highest to flick Elias Pelembe’s free-kick past Denis Onyango.

SuperSport completely dominated after that and missed a number of chances, though Brian Baloyi and Co deserve a lot of credit for some resolute defending.

The Brazilians started the first half like they had something to prove, with Franklin Cale and Pelembe causing havoc down the flanks.

Despite an early chance for Glen Salmon which hit the side-netting, it was all Sundowns. Mabhuti Khenyeza should have put his side ahead midway through the half after being played in by Katlego Mphela, but Onyango pulled off a fine save to deny the striker.

Hlompo Kekana and Daine Klate both had shots from the edge of the area which went wide, before Mphela’s left-footed curler from 20 yards out shaved the upright.

Gavin Hunt’s decision to replace the struggling Phelani Mpangase with Letladi Madubanya seemed to do the trick for United, who completely dominated after the break.

Klate found space in the area, but his weak shot trickled just wide, while Jabulani Maluleke, Brent Carelse and Madubanya tested Baloyi, who looked unbeatable on the ground, but was very suspect with any crosses into the area.

Then, on 59 minutes and completely against the run of play, Sundowns took the lead. Pelembe’s curling free-kick found Mungomeni, who rose highest to flick past Onyango.

The goal spurred SuperSport into action, but somehow they could just not get the ball in the back of the net. Baloyi pulled of a brilliant save to keep out Klate’s close-range drive, while Mungomeni cleared off the line with substitute Dario Monteiro waiting to tap home.

And with just minutes to go, Matthew Booth produced a world-class tackle to stop Bongani Khumalo’s goalbound shot, ensuring Sundowns the win – and the title race going down to the wire.

Let me start by congratulating my boys for a wonderful against SSU&thank them for a great Xmas present they gave us.I just wonder what are all the hyprocretes saying who suggested that we were scared of SSU?Yes our performance dropped in the 2nd half due to the fact that we've done a lot of travelling over the last few weeks, but big ups to my boys for a job well done.To u Mr I Hate Downs Fans i think u should swallow ur pride&be man enough to accept that u lost tonight to a better team a team that's so determined to protect it's proud record of 3x back2back League titles. The remarks u're making are very childish to say the least. If u look into this win properly u'll realize we still have a game in hand which means if u happened to drop points at anytime from now on as think u will due to pressure that we're putting on u guys&we win that game in hand which i believe we will due to this confidence booster win we had against ur team we will go all the way to capture the league!!!I hope u come to ur senses now u Cameleon!!!

Yellow ma-orgeniser, how are you guys?

This league is ours, SSU is gonna drop some points and we'll overtake them on the last matches, Hristo is a legend. Of the 3 games i marked as key in our ambitions to win the league, 2 (SSU and Chiefs) are now down, we're left with Santos. Should we beat them, we'll be home, safe, sweet and dry...!!!

Merry Christmas to you all.Hope there will be no suicides for the losers who throughout the season dispised Sandawana. To Chiefs fans...Buy those loaves of bread & donate to the needy instead of playing with food for heaven sake.By the way the borders to Zimbabwe are open now for Bobby & Doctor to go & scout for new talent. To Bhaka Ju Ju...really you need Divine intervention.I suggest you call an Imbizo & invite Inyangas, sangomas, priests of different dominations including prophets & voodoo practicers.Maybe those bones will at last come together.Tsatsantsa...you know always you can learn something from the big brother.Big up all the organisers...Always Ka bo yellow.Last but not least....Matti Pattison must be in the Bafana set up for 2010 Mr Mamillions...you wont regret it for sure.Ja the style is there to see & there is still room for improvement...as the ORGANISERS call it simple...The sky is the limit

Congra sundowns even the match was not that exciting as expected but it was a game to watch.

WONDER, STONZA SCORPION and all the CIRCUS CLOWNS, you can open your mouth now and shout like you have never done it before.

While you are at it, just remember.......CHIEFS WILL FINISH THE SEASON ABOVE SUNDOWNS. So while you are celebrating, prepare your selves for the tears we gonna cause you when we snatch the league right just below your noses guys
