Cosmos Stun Pirates

Posted: 2 December 2009 Time: 22:11

Jomo Cosmos have caused one of the shocks of the Absa Premiership season by recording just their second win in 19 games with a 1-0 success over Orlando Pirates at the Rand Stadium on Wednesday night.

The result might put paid to Pirates' title hopes, but revives Cosmos' chances of beating the drop as substitute Siza Dlamini netted from the penalty-spot midway through the second half.

The match was delayed 45 minutes due to the heavy rains, and for most of the night the teams battled to come to terms with the wet conditions underfoot, making for a scrappy game that did not see too much constructive football.

It was the Buccaneers that looked more threatening in the opening half – In the first 20 minutes Cosmos keeper Avril Phali was tested by Rooi Mahamutsa, and Thulasizwe Mbuyane, doing well to keep out both efforts.   Dikgang Mabalane had a decent chance in the 25th minute when he created space to shoot in the box, but his shot flew just over the cross bar.

Pirates though were certainly the team on top in the opening stanza, but after Mabalane’s chance, the Bucs attackers failed to find the target with a string of efforts from around 25-yards out.

Cosmos’ first real chance of the game materialised just before the break when Bongani Theletsane squared the ball for Diarra Gacoussou, but his finish, or lack thereof, was woeful.

Cosmos started the second half brightly and had the first chance of the half when Siza Dlamini broke down the right flank, but he was unable to pick out a team-mate as Zvenyika Makonese slid in with the challenge.

The home side however persisted with their efforts and they were rewarded when Makonese gave away a penalty. Dlamini beat Moeneeb Josephs from the spot, despite the keeper guessing the right way.

Ezenkosi faced a stern test of their nerves in the final 25 minutes of the game as Pirates went in search of an equaliser.

And while the visitors enjoyed most of the ball, Phali did not have to make any notable saves as the Sea Robbers failed to penetrate a determined and at times desperate Ezenkosi back line who held out to ensure the valuable three points for the relegation battlers.

The Kaizer "Zim IV" Thiefs must shut their mouths. If they are that good, why are they not at the top? Why did they fail to beat us? Its our forum. Give us a space to deal with our problem.

With so many players, we only have one player who can head the ball and thats Lucas Twala. No wonder, everytime the ball goes wide to Mabalane, I know that its a dead ball or will be used as count against us because will lose 99% of the high balls in the opposition box.

We need to sign hard working, tall and strong players who are good in the air and on ground, not just skillful players with potential. If the player is short, then he must be as good as Vilakazi. Sign good hard working players like Phelembe, Rogers, Klate, Mabizela(minus the discipline problem),Cale, tso vilakazi,Sheppard. Khoza, if you dont have money then go to Zim like Chiefs where you will buy one and get one free.
