Sundowns miss 3 points

Posted: 14 February 2010 Time: 17:51

Mamelodi Sundowns and Santos played to a goalless draw at the Super Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

Despite Santos playing more than 25 minutes with only ten men, Downs were still unable to find the goal that would see them catch SuperSport United at the top of the Absa Premiership.

With the chance to go top of the log, tied on points with SuperSport, the Brazilians certainly didn’t play like title contenders in the first half. In fact, the first 45 minutes saw Santos as the better of the two sides.

The People’s Team were much more creative in attack, often using the width of the pitch when going forward. In defence Santos were also very impressive as the Sundowns one-man-attack, in the form of Katlego Mphela, struggled to penetrate a very stubborn back four.

The Brazilians did look good early on, especially Elias Pelembe, when he let loose with a powerful shot from the edge of the 18-yard box. Unfortunately for his side his shot sailed inches wide of the upright. But that was about as good as it got for Downs in the first half.

From there on out the Brazilians defence struggled to deal with the pace of the Santos attack. Romano Scott in particular was good down the right flank often supplying dangerous crosses into the box.

In the 13th minute Erwin Isaacs found some space on the edge of the Downs area and with a quick turn he managed to get a shot in on target, but his effort was superbly saved by Brian Baloyi.

Sadly, at the other end of the pitch the Santos’ keeper, Tshepo Motsoeneng, suffered a terrible injury and had to be substituted in the 16th minute, which saw Lee Langevelt replace him.

Santos almost found the opening goal in the 22nd minute. Isaacs got in behind the Brazilians' defence following a ball over the top and as he made his way toward goal Baloyi came off his line. Isaacs proceeded tried to chip the keeper, but Baloyi managed to parry his effort away for a corner.

Santos then looked to have gone in front a couple of minutes later when Eleazar Rodgers met a cross from Scott and fired it into the back of the net, but the goal was ruled off-side.

The second half saw the Brazilians try to change things up immediately as they opted for a more attacking approach, which saw Surprise Moriri replace Franklin Cale.

The game took a bit of a sour turn in the 64th minute when Santos were reduced to ten men after a dangerous looking tackle by Bonginkosi Macala. Just after coming on, Macala was sent off after stamping on Mphela’s foot when contesting for the ball.

From there on out Sundowns mounted attack after attack on the Santos goal, but time and again they failed to break down their defence.

In fact, the People’s Team had the best chance of the half when Mogogi Gabonamangi struck the woodwork in the 81st minute with a powerful 25-yard shot.

In the end neither team could find the winning goal and the sides shared the points.

Mphela was out of form but was played the whole game.Pa is reserving himself for Bafana. And it seemes like there is a vendenta against Cale.To still chalange Matsatsantsa we must play as a unit.On a positive note the guys played well and we are still contenders for the league.I feel sorry for Swallows cause the players promised us yesterday after match that they are going for the kill.As for Pa,if your mind is on Bafana fake an injury...we still have Vuyo who can do the job better than you are doing for the past two games. You suck my laaitie.

Ike man, the state of nation address speech, damn... BrokenFan, the could haves, should haves, give us a break and take one for yourself...
1. If Thieves call a draw a championship point, so can we.
2. Ok, the referee might have be kind to us, they have been too kind to Thieves since their inception and Thieves have been kind to them, if you know what I mean...
3. It good that we drew, SSU will feel that they home dry and relax and thats when they will loose, they been good under pressure, lets see hwo they do under less pressure, while Thieves are useless under, less or no pressure.
4. If SSU wins the league, they must go parade it in Naturena, I swear they can get a lot permanent supporters that side, after all SSU is the only team that grants them their wishes, give Sundowns a stiff competition i.e...
5. Sundowns will win the league, keep you eye peeled

Realistically SSU are favourates now to equal Downs's record of 3 in a row! However with 2 points and 9 points to play for anything can still happen.

There is stiil hope..unlike some Zimbos who are already dead and buried....hehehehehe

Wearing his red pants and a white t-shirt he hit the roads of Bloemfontein on foot. His jumbled Teko Modise’s hair-style he made with a knife was laughed at by everyone in the streets. He ignored everyone as his mind was focusing on his Valentines Day blind-date. Upon arrival at the local restaurant, he took out a half-smoked cigarette off his socks and started smoking. His blind-date arrived in the same red and white colors: “You must be Kali” the date said. To his excitement he dropped the cigarette, stood up and responded: “No ways, Timothy??? thee Timothy Batabaire? Oh my gosh!!! This is not happening.”

@Sbu, leave them bro, Maswaiswai will sound their death knell come this Wednesday. As for us Abafana bak'thula ne Xolo, our campaign from the start wasn't for the first row campaigners, atleast we managed to have a winning streak that warmed us into thinking we might campaign, but as wuickly as that came, it cooled off quickly. But momentum we have still, come the cup, we might end uop annexing one. @mashoban, atleast conceding that the league might be running away from you, is atleast a departure from a hardcore sunflop mentality, but big ups to you for seeing that. pity your fellow supporters are so blind, and their comments dont make any sense. Instead one says Chiefs under pressure, or no pressure dont do well, what are tyou talking about really? A club that has won so many silverware or goldware really, or simply you dont know what Chiefs is all about. And nogal, some of the goldware has been won against floppers, unless you started supporting your club this year. Nxxx

To all Downs haters who r celebrating loss of points on Sunday, let me give u the 411 on this race:

The permutations from the restart were that SSU and MS would finish on level points and SSU would have an advantage due to their superior goal difference..which means unless something huge happened goalwise..Downs could still lose it even if they win all their remaining games..as long as SSU also won all their games..

So now even after Sunday's game..Downs still rely on SSU dropping points and Downs winning their games to pip them from the top. The only problem is that SSU need 7/9 to win the league as things stand.

So to all the haters...u need to admit that Downs is your envy...celebrate all you can but leave room for disappointment as anything can still happen in the next three games...

I love this team...The Sky is The Limit

Hehehehe SIBUSISO, Busani's mathematical calculations now comprise science and psychology. He is talking of pressure, wins, draws, relax, referees, wining the league, thieves and all that. This formula of Sundowns winning the PSL is becoming way too complicated now.

Gaxa reminds me of the late Sizwe who would show any commitment at club level during league games leading to the world cup.

Otherwise I think the rest of the guys are doing thier best.It was always going to be difficult to come 2 games from behind.Killer is NOT that much effective without Khanyeza and is very much wasteful.

Pelembe is just a star.

When will Downs fans admit that this league is beyond them. The only thing for you is to wish SSU bad luck and hope other teams win it for you.

All you can do is to sit and watch

Hey Guys, let us be realistic. if sundowns was to meet supersport in their last games i would say yeah! right the race is still on. but looking at the fixture that supersport left with, i'm telling you all niggas that the league is over. supersport got no challenge.

Big up to the guys, may be next year we will have a race of like bucs and them on the 2008/2009 league.
