Kaizer Chiefs beat AmaZulu 1-0 in a League match at Loftus on Wednesday night.
Chiefs had goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune sent off early in the second half for punching Pere Ariweriyai. The goal was scored by Nkosinathi Nhleko in the first half.
Both sides missed a penalty kick, Marc Van Heerden for AmaZulu and Josta Dladla for Chiefs.
As Chiefs began to find their rhythm, Usuthu had to weather a storm of fairly consistent attacks, nearly going behind in the 16th minute as Siphiwe Tshabalala’s shot was cleared off the line by Pere Ariweriyai.
More was to come from the hosts as Mbongeni Mzimela pushed Nkosinathi Nhleko’s header over the bar and then watched Reneilwe Letsholonyane’s speculative effort go wide.
Nhleko was working hard to give his side the edge and he got his reward in the 36th minute when he beat Mzimela with an effort from a central position.
The visiting side had the perfect opportunity to bring parity to the match just two minutes into the second period when Khune was sent off after punching Areweriyai. A penalty was awarded to AmaZulu.
Chiefs were forced into sacrificing Tshabalala as Arthur Bartman made his way onto the field.
But the score was to stay the same as Marc van Heerden missed with his penalty attempt.
Barman’s next action came in the 58th minute, when he kept out a shot by Dlamini.
Dlamini was certainly the liveliest of the visitor’s attackers and he forced Bartman into another save, this time from a 75th minute header.
AmaKhosi could even have added a late second goal after van Heerden conceded a penalty in the 94th minute, but Josta Dladla missed from the spot.
