Controversial win for Chiefs

Posted: 20 November 2009 Time: 22:04

Kaizer Chiefs jumped up to fourth on the Absa Premiership standings after a 1-0 win over 10-man Santos at Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium in Port Elizabeth on Friday night, but it was not a match without controversy.

Reneilwe Letsholonyane scored the first-ever goal at the new World Cup stadium to sink the People’s Team, who had Thabiso Ntloana sent off just two minutes after the goal for a stamp on Nkosinathi Nhleko.

But with five minutes to go, substitute Eleazar Rodgers headed the ball over the line before it was cleared by Thabang Rooi. Referee Harold Lekitane initially looked to have pointed to the spot, but then bizarrely ordered a drop-ball – much to Santos’ digust.

In an even first half, Chiefs had the first chance when Josta Dladla found space inside the area, but his first touch was a poor one and allowed the defence to clear.

Letsholonyane fired a shot straight at goalkeeper Tshepo Motsoeneng soon after, before Tyren Arendse dragged one wide at the other end.

The two sides were restricted to long-range efforts up until the 39th minute, when a well-worked free-kick routine from Chiefs almost allowed Thabang Rooi to score, but for some brave goalkeeping.

Arthur Bartman also had to be alert at the other end when Graham King burst through, but it remained goalless at the break.

Santos almost scored the opener early in the second half – King’s run down the left setting up Phikolethu Spelman, but Thomas Sweswe put his body on the line to clear the goalbound shot.

A few minutes later and Chiefs had the lead. A great ball from Knowledge Musona played Abia Nale in on goal. His cross was only parried to the feet of Letsholonyane, who calmly side-footed home.

Three minutes later and Santos’ position was even worse – a red card for Ntloana for a stamp on the hard-working Nhleko, who soon after beat two defenders before forcing a near-post save from Motsoeneng.

Santos kept fighting and after King volleyed straight at Bartman, the controversial moment when the linesman failed to spot the ball crossing the line – and thereby handing Chiefs the three points.

As a Chiefs supporter, am happy 4 da win. hwevr da circumstances, i.e. referees goof takes da joy out of it. was a clear goal, ball had crossed da line. shame to assistant ref whom i clearly heard saying 'ga ke a bona sepe' - i didn't see anythin. if he cant c anythn, he shudn't be a part of da game. sorry Santos.

Am happy for this best team for the way it has been progressing in the league. They are a dark horse to win the league. This is one team SSU must worry about in as far as the league title is concerned. Fact is that they have extra powers than any other team to win the league. They have luck which most teams don’t have & they also have referees who will make sure that they archive what other teams can’t. I think its time for teams like Santos to admit that they don’t have luck or referees to help them when they play against SA best team. I feel for Santos as its now for the second time the same thing happen against the same team. Makhooosi, 2009/2010 league champions, wherether we like it or not, by hook or crook………Makhooosi……damn I like this team

Santos must be charged:
1.Santos Plares Delayed the game for five minutes
2.Santos players remonstrated with the refs and thretened him physically after the game

They must learn to accept the refs decision -wrong or right!

This result must be forced down their throats just like it happed to Chiefs!
Chiefs burnt the stadium bcoz they didn't want to accept the wrong decisions of the ref and they were severely punished! No one ever challenged the route cause of all those evil actions by chiefs supporters! The ref caused all these but he was never mentioned at the hearings. The ref's error was forced down our throats by a hefty fine of half a million rands!

Peeps lets get things into proper perspective here, shall we? The ref was unsighted hence he first gave a penalty but being a good ref he is, he sought advice from his 2nd in charge, the linesman, he also said he didn't see it In the ref's mind, he thought it was a penalty but after consultation he felt it will not be fair to award a penalty like that. Can you imagine if he said it was a penalty that was not there in the first place, where he could be now? Under the circumstances, he decioded on a drop-ball which according to me is fair. Peeps, get this one right, the ref did not see the goal, yes it was a goal, but the ref didn't see it!! Ok. Liverpool even got a worse one where a beachball helped deflect a ball to the goals and it was a goal, as we speak, liverpool has many defeats this season with that one included!!! Chiefs has had controversilal decisions aginst them this season but have not complained too much. The Wits solitary goal in the league, the Chiefs penalties denied when they played Ajax, so mistakes happen. This is another mistake here. But before you crucify the ref, understand his dilemma. He was not sure and afvice he did seek but didn't get it. I'd rather live with tha decision he made than if he had awarded a penalty that was not there in the first place.

I like what VV said, after Msibi talked of Chiefs' next five games, he said after those matches, people will be talking about Chiefs. I am just hoping he silences a few SA loudmouths. Chiefs is on the up but despite this, one must not be overly optimistic. My worry still is two things, our inability to bury teams when we have them cornered and the second worry is the Chiefs defence's panic when under pressure. Confidence is coming back to Amakhosi including defence but we must work on that. Why was Rooi crying after the game guys?
