Cosmos give Downs a scare

Posted: 1 November 2009 Time: 17:32

Mamelodi Sundowns came from behind to beat Jomo Cosmos 3-1 on Sunday.

Daniel Gabarone scored in the opening minutes to send Ezenkosi into a surprise lead, but second-half strikes from Katlego Mphela and Benedict Vilakazi put the Brazilians in charge of the match.

Siyabonga Ngubane added a third in injury time.

Cosmos got off to a flyer. Gabarone was allowed to run free on goal, after a good pass from Bongani Theletsane, and the youngster calmly placed the ball past Brian Baloyi to hand Cosmos a 1-0 lead.

Sundowns looked for an immediate reply, but Papi Zothwane’s drive from outside the box flew over the crossbar and Esrom Nyandoro had similar luck with a 16th minute effort from 30 yards out.

On 27 minutes Mabhuti Khenyeza tried a curler from just outside the penalty that was narrowly wide of goal, while strike partner Katlego Mphela did hit the target with a free-kick a short later, but Phali made a comfortable save.

Five minutes before the break Cosmos almost doubled their lead, with Sekou Camara driving the ball just wide of Sundowns’ goal after a good cross from Gabarone.

Sundowns continued to struggle in attack in the early stages of the second half, but on 56 minutes the match turned in their favour. Lebohang Mokoena produced a fine cross from the right flank and an unmarked Mphela turned the ball home to make it 1-1.

Mphela’s strike made him the first man to hit double figures in goals scored in the 2009/10 Absa Premiership season.

Downs substitute Benedict Vilakazi put the hosts into the lead for the first time on the hour mark, scoring just a couple of minutes after replacing Zothwane. The midfielder stabbed the ball past Phali from close range after Cosmos had failed to clear their lines from a corner kick.

Any hopes Cosmos had of getting back into the game were snuffed out with just over ten minutes to play when defender Ousmane Berthe received his second yellow card for a foul on Nyandoro and was dismissed.

Sundowns wrapped up the game when substitute Ngubane scored a third deep into injury time.

Mabhuti is a workaholic and he keeps the opposing defenders on their toes but I feel that he misses too many easy chances he needs to calm down a bit.Otherwise he is going to cost us.

Floyd, I concur with you on the tactics and team selection. The coach must never approach any game with 7 defenders. 3 defenders are good enough. I'm just concerned about the goaly department. We are exposed, badly.
Kenyeza must stop his envy toward other players scoring. He is giving opportunities to increase his tally. If he huff & puffs like he does squandering give away chances like he does, Moriri is recovering. And he does waste. Cheezboy can play that role aswell.
Otherwise, we should finish a better position than the previous season. God bless Downs and no other team.

Thanks coach for not listening to your emotions about Vilakazi!
I am also confident that good players like Robyn are soon to return to their well deserved selection as well.

Downs has a group of quality players!!

Sundowns need consistents to win this league. i hear that our beloved coach ( Mr. stoickvoich) is keeping the photos when we won the league , he has promised Ted that he did not come here to draw and get position but he came to win the League

keep doing well Mr coach -we are position 5 and we nothing else but to occupy spot Numer 2 and put pressure on the Matsantsa of Tshwana

Ooh thank God we won and its got nothing to do with that big headed coach, he still playing that scrum half/fly half boy Pattson, that boy is useless, he should be playing left wing cross sacks, but no he's busy hiding behind other players, avoiding passes, I still maintain, that boy is a affirmitive action case and it counts against the team, we got so many impact players. Truth be told, majority of PSL coaches are caucasian, while caucasian players are a minority and about 99% of these caucasian players are playing regulary regardless of whether there are better African players in a team. Now blame it to the owners because they alway go for European coaches who when they get here, they just do like wise, colunize our players.
