SuperSport thump Pirates

Posted: 21 October 2009 Time: 21:36

Ten-man SuperSport United beat Orlando Pirates 3-0 in an Absa Premiership clash thanks to a Daine Klate brace and a goal by Dario Monteiro at Loftus Stadium on Wednesday night.

SuperSport had Tsietsi Mahoa sent off for a second bookable offence in the first half.

The Buccaneers, despite having the lion’s share of possession throughout the game, could not really create any decent goal scoring opportunities and consequently were punished by SuperSport in their forays forward.

Against the run of play SuperSport found themselves in the lead after some sloppy defending by Pirates. A cross came in from the right and the Buccaneers defence appeared to be sleeping as it found Klate unmarked at the back post. He fired a powerful shot that was deflected past Josephs, 1-0.

Pirates nearly hit back a minute before the break and were unlucky to see a Chenene shot rebound of the post. The Buccaneers winger picked the ball up on the counter-attack and let fly with a volley from just outside the box that beat the keeper but only succeeded in striking the upright.

But not all was lost for Pirates as SuperSport were reduced to ten men just before the half time break after Tsietsi Mahoa was shown his second yellow card for a professional foul.

Glen Salmon was left up front as the sole striker and what a job he did, especially in the 70th minute when he did brilliantly to hold up a long ball from the back before playing Siyabonga Nkosi into some space inside the 18-yard box. Lucky Lekgwathi consequently pulled him down and the referee did not hesitate to point to the penalty spot.

Klate then made it 2-0 for SuperSport with a superb finish from the spot in the 70th minute.

Pirates continued to press forward and were again hit on the counter attack in the 92nd minute. This time some clinical finishing by substitute Dario Monteiro rubbed salt into the wounds of the Sea Robbers, 3-0.

With the win SuperSport moved three points clear of Orlando Pirates and onto the top of the Absa Premiership.

I bought 3 Pirates jersey’s (Black, Red and White) because they started very well

and now they are losing very well, I am tired of this inconsistency, I want results.

Chiefs is losing fairly because they is just no quality players as per PSL standards.

Pirates is losing with quality players and a big squad.

Kroll, this is the very same team u had last season, Whats wrong?

I just cannot afford to lose to Kaizer Chiefs not when they are bellow par.

strikers are played as midfieders! no goals, you cant win games by playing 7 midfielders, no silverweare again this season, i am afraid, khoza must start putting a lot of effort into this team now that he is not a SAFA pres.

i dont mean to sound rude or what but its my opinion and its my democratic right to do so, ever since the arrival of the former Ajax coach pirates have been playing unproductive football, i wish Krol could be alone as initially. i take nothing away from the man but i dont feel right about him.

Eish am a pirates fan nd i was watching pirates game yersterday nd the way they play is good some where the mostly the one who cost pirates is gumbi what kind of tactics is he using, why krol keep on playing him ahead of kamwendo now i see that coach don't like shakiro and if he continue playing gumbi ahead of shakiro pirates won't win and he wil be fired, place krol play kamwendo u will get the result.

the times sports headlines

Orlando Pirates are suffering from an incurable disease. Simply put, it's a "we can't win games when it matters most" syndrome.

This goes to the fact that Pirates need to change their starting 11 ASAP. Teko is completely off-form, Benson is still nursing an injury and also fatigue has caught up with him. Lucky Lekgwathi is playing at left back, why?? The position is supposed to be played by the left footed energetic player like (Mdledle) but Mr. Khoza decided to let him go, again, why??. Happy Jele is constantly caught out of position, because of lack of experience, but for some reason the coach is still using him. Some drastic changes need to be done at Pirates ASAP before the Ship sinks into the deep end.
