Santos pull one over Bucs

Santos ended Orlando Pirates’ unbeaten run in the 2009/10 Absa Premiership, with a 1-0 win at the Orlando Stadium on Saturday evening.

The People’s Team’s Erwin Isaacs scored the only goal of the game late in the first half, securing the visitors an impressive away win.

There was no goalmouth action to speak of in the first half hour of the game, as the two disciplined teams retained their shape and kept things tight at the back.

The players were frustrated by a lack of space in midfield and the rather poor state of the pitch – Orlando Stadium may be one of the country’s best football venues but it’s playing surface is certainly not conducive to the ‘beautiful game’ at present.

In the 32nd minute a defensive error from Santos saw Gert Schalkwyk send Thembinkosi Fanteni clean through on goal but the former Ajax Cape Town striker could only shoot straight at goalkeeper Tshepo Motsoeneng.

On 37 minutes Santos created a great opportunity, with Phikolethu Spelman played in with a wonderful pass, but the striker pulled his shot wide with only Moeneeb Josephs to beat.

However, seven minutes later Spelman provided an inch-perfect cross to pick out an unmarked Isaacs in the penalty area – and the Santos forward finished with aplomb to put the Cape side 1-0 up heading into half time.

Teko Modise nearly brought the Buccaneers level within the first minute of the second half, forcing Motsoeneng into another great save with a well-struck shot direct from a free-kick.

Substitute Bennett Chenene, Fanteni and Lucas Thwala were all unable to hit the target for Pirates, and the Soweto side needed Josephs to make a fantastic save to deny Graham King from making it 2-0 late in the game.

Although many Pirates supporters might be unhappy, i think this will atleast take the pressure off them, loosing is never good but i feel they needed to for their own good.

Well done Santos...!!!

Hardluck Bucs it still early even though it was long overdue. But da day Krol have da guts to bench Modise and Mashego dat when they will start winning again coz they are veri selfish and they are playing for themselves not to benefit the team. But a lose doesnt make U a bad team and it does help da coach to see where hs team is no strng and where it leaking. Also welldone to Santos, hope they maintain dis form or buildup 4rm it. To Bucs there is still time

Pirates played well but I feel like the coach has to learn to make the team be independent. Stop on relying on Teko even if he cant deliver. He's one player for me shouldnt have finished the game. I feel like Gert still had something to deliver but he was taken out. And moaning about players suffering from a fatigue is so stupid cos the coach fielded em knowing that. Sir Vlad put Shabba on the bench for that matter and the team managed without him. Come back Pirates, we need your competition.... KC until God and satan reconcile

Zane Moosa said on SS4 before that when you play against Pirates, close Teko Modise and half the battle is won.He also stated that Mabalane and Teko have become now predictable so I found interesting after the game.

Teko is a real "Fake Superstar" as Mamadouge said on Marawas show. I dont support OP but I just like the game but that guy is playing shit!He wants other players to always give ball to him and he gives it away and dont chase! How did he become a fooballer of the year when his team won NO silverware?
