Downs, Chiefs in thrilling draw

Posted: 17 October 2009 Time: 17:28

Mamelodi Sundowns and Kaizer Chiefs have played to an entertaining 2-2 draw in the Absa Premiership at the Super Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

However it was Chiefs goalkeeper Arthur Bartman who was the real hero of the match, making several blinding saves to help his side earn a point in a game in which they really should have come away with nothing.

The Amakhosi started brightly, but it was Sundowns who gradually took control of the game before breaking the deadlock on the half hour mark thanks to Mphela. The Bafana Bafana striker earned a penalty after being brought down by Rooi and duly converted the spot kick to make it 1-0.

The opening phase of the second half saw ‘Downs looking to kill off the Soweto side with a second goal and it was only the brilliance of Bartman that held them at bay.

However, Chiefs turned the game in their favour in stunning style, scoring two goals in quick succession to go into a 2-1 lead.

First, in the 57th minute, Musona showed great speed and strength to get in behind the Sundowns defence and his cool finish past Brian Baloyi brought the visitors level very much against the run of play.

Tshabalala, who had only been on the field about five minutes after coming on as a substitute, put Chiefs into a lead when he scored a stunner in the 63rd minute, curling a 30-metre free kick into the top corner of the net. Baloyi could only stand and admire the midfielder’s fabulous strike.

However, with just under 20 minutes to play, Sundowns restored parity when Mphela cleverly worked some space in the penalty area before unleashing a low shot that beat Bartman’s right hand and nestled in the bottom corner.

The home team looked the likelier scorers as full time neared, though it was Chiefs who got the ball into the back of the net via substitute Jose Torrealba, only to see the effort disallowed.

Wonderful soccer display by both teams on Saturday. I find it strange that most commmentators are crediting Bartman as the saviour for my beloved Chiefs on Saturday and rightfully so. Let us not forget that Bartman is a keeper and his pay cheque is based on fulfilling those duties and he truly earned his pay cheque on Saturday, his mandate is to stop strikers from scoring and he did exactly that and Chiefs pays him for that. Let's guard against this thinking that he did us a favour on Saturday otherwise we would have been walloped, he simple did his job.

As for Doctor Khumalo's comments after the game about the Management team that he is part of the lesser said about it the better. How the hell does he go off and criticise so badly even the players that he is likely to bump into in the Chiefs corridors this week. May i remind Doctor that if Chiefs fails he is part of that failure as he forms part of the management no matter the capacity he holds. Doctor please produce players to do defence duties so that we can replace Rooi that you so heavily criticised and make more input around the senior team and do that at Naturena and not on Supersport 4. Your comments were disturbing and i personally feel supersport should not let you analyze future Chiefs game as it's pathetic to critic the managers that you possible sit around the table with.

I'm and Chiefs ke e rata ho hlanya.

Thabang Rooi is a cow. Where is Nahayo? Was Sweswe suspended?

Thabang Rooi is a cow. More penalties will be conceded by him if he keeps playing. I think this was the third penalty he conceded this season only. Doc was right. The guy is a liability.

Jambo is better than Punch at left back. Punch was always at no man's land and countless balls found Pelembe unmarked.

The second Sundowns goal was Punch's fault.

Cheeseboy must be given more game time, and be introduce to Bafana bafana, anyway he was part of under 23 structure. he should have graduated by now. Hayi bo, the boy is skillful and very creative.

As for Chiefs, they still need to find an ACE player who can win them games. Everyone is average in that team.

It was a great game all in all,but had sundowns striker worked together than playing as selfish as they were,we would be saying something different to what we saying now,and the guy with the sign that read WE NOT MARIZBURG UNITED could have sat on it till the final whistle....am just glad we starting to see end results from the downs coache all the best for the future
