Downs, Chiefs in thrilling draw

Posted: 17 October 2009 Time: 17:28

Mamelodi Sundowns and Kaizer Chiefs have played to an entertaining 2-2 draw in the Absa Premiership at the Super Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

However it was Chiefs goalkeeper Arthur Bartman who was the real hero of the match, making several blinding saves to help his side earn a point in a game in which they really should have come away with nothing.

The Amakhosi started brightly, but it was Sundowns who gradually took control of the game before breaking the deadlock on the half hour mark thanks to Mphela. The Bafana Bafana striker earned a penalty after being brought down by Rooi and duly converted the spot kick to make it 1-0.

The opening phase of the second half saw ‘Downs looking to kill off the Soweto side with a second goal and it was only the brilliance of Bartman that held them at bay.

However, Chiefs turned the game in their favour in stunning style, scoring two goals in quick succession to go into a 2-1 lead.

First, in the 57th minute, Musona showed great speed and strength to get in behind the Sundowns defence and his cool finish past Brian Baloyi brought the visitors level very much against the run of play.

Tshabalala, who had only been on the field about five minutes after coming on as a substitute, put Chiefs into a lead when he scored a stunner in the 63rd minute, curling a 30-metre free kick into the top corner of the net. Baloyi could only stand and admire the midfielder’s fabulous strike.

However, with just under 20 minutes to play, Sundowns restored parity when Mphela cleverly worked some space in the penalty area before unleashing a low shot that beat Bartman’s right hand and nestled in the bottom corner.

The home team looked the likelier scorers as full time neared, though it was Chiefs who got the ball into the back of the net via substitute Jose Torrealba, only to see the effort disallowed.

Sundowns stop saying that if it wasn't of Bartman you were gona chow us that is nonsense coz the guy was just doing his job, he was hired to stop your teams from scoring against chiefs and he is going to continue to stop you. Khosi 4lfe

Those who said my beloved chiefs was outplayed by the so called sunflour they must be joking. What i saw on saterday is a gud football;but what i can advise mabuti khanyeza about is that "he must just go back to ajax b'cause muhsin is gòne back so no stress"and another thing is that if it wasn't 4 that mr ref we would have been singing another chune now.He disallowed Torrealbas' goal. How did Torrealba bring that tall guy called boose down is impossible. Slow down, broer. Just look at yo mom after u just uttered dat sort of a rubbish & tell me what u feel inside. We r adults, surely.

Just as we thought that we have enough sunflower oil to make our daily bread, referee spoiled it again. Please ref stop playing for sunflops, because u make them think they are better and they start to make noise. I am dissappointed by ur decision and should be recalled like Sipho mabuza.

"That number 17, 15 and 9 belong in europe....." those were more or less the words of VV.
Sundowns should've won this one but now we have to concentrate on our next game and start picking us maximum points.
'm not surprised to see kaizer shit supporters defending their teams poor performs, after all they're used to watching those mediocre players of theirs.. Where the hell was Dladla? "i know how sundowns players think....." Hahaha Pittson turned you and that so-called Beauty into spectators.
I guess that bartman kept chiefs in the game but our strikers need to go back to the basics.. The keeper has already committee himself, so wat do you do? Either go around him and pick your spot or chip the ball over him.

Palemba- damn 'm i Dnt know what to say, you had a great game which left me thinking "why did gordon turn you down when you first arrived at sundowns" we had and stil have players wit a small frame at downs. Zothwane played some very nice touches.. The player who didn't perform well was our captain-hopefully the coach gives Ncaca or Katong a go ahead instead of Nyandora, Pattison did all the work, trust me the bafana call up will come.

Kaizer shit supporters consider yourselves lucky and stop this thing of a penalty claim, that midget gave Booth a push at the back... Everybody knows that any slight push in the box is a foul.. And besides Baloyi already heard that the whistle has gone hence he jus looked at the midget scoring. Sundowns were far the better team but football can be a funny game, kaizer shit were jus lucky.

Sundowns played their best football in the season so far (well done!!). However, even their best could not shake Chiefs. Some say we were lucky, I disagree cos not a single goal attempt from Downs hit the posts; they all were brilliantly thwarted by the goalkeeper. Where is luck in that?? I could say they were lucky that Torrealba's goal was disallowed. Isn't that a fitting statement for them??? I think what let us down on the day was our midfield; they were nowhere in the game. I want to wrap up with a question; Do we think that the scoreline would have been the same had Chiefs all those chances created?? Just food for thought.

What a game. Shabalalas freekick damn it was superb jst hope he practice dat more often, Pelembe damn he is pure class jst hope he doesnt get injured, Musona he needs to be given more time and start more often so dat he can be more confident, Mphela wow his 2nd goal dat was a true reflection of a striker (even though he should hv done beta), Bartman wow he was brilliant and pulled off world class saves and he uses hs experiance veri well and Khanyeza composure and relax even though U were keepin their defence busy. Anyway both teams played well and they are improving each an avery game. Weldone to both teams by da way im a Brazilian who is crazy both soccer and who doesnt watch soccer 1 sided

how barttman is excluded from chiefs is amazing. When strikers score goals and they win, the team won. When goalies make superb saves, its about him, not the team therefore, if it wasn't for barttman lucky chiefs would have lost, if it wasn't for mphela sundowns would have lost.it fits the equation.

I must say agree with few intelligent people here. No one lost or won, a draw jus means simple that. Not so long ago, these empty headed Mike Ntombela punkass supporters were sayin Bartman was old and ish. Now he saved the day, 'Lucky Chiefs, if it wasnt for Bartman, they could have lost and ish'. We all watched the game. Shut the hell up. Bartman was part of the team. If it wasnt for Musona, we could have lost and the same goes for Sundowns, if it wasnt for Mphela, they could have lost. And Im disappointed a BB player can miss such opportunities.
