Students beat Free State Stars

Posted: 9 April 2008 Time: 21:12

Clive Moyo-Modise scored the only goal of the game to hand BidVest Wits a 1-0 win over Free State Stars in their Absa Premiership clash at the BidVest Stadium on Wednesday night.

Ea Lla Koto got off to a good start and should gone ahead in the third minute when Students’ keeper Moeneeb Josephs spilled Sthembiso Ngcobo’s shot, but striker Collins Chabalala sent his follow-up shot high and wide of goal.

The hosts’ first shot on goal arrived in the 16th minute through Marcos de Jesus, but the striker’s tame effort was easily saved by Stars’ keeper Kennedy Mweene.

The visitors launched a quick counter and should have opened the scoring through Prince Olomu, who was put clear on goal by Matome Madimabe, but Olomu failed to beat Josephs, sending his effort wide.

BidVest Wits took the lead in the 22nd minute when Richard Rantjie put in a low cross from the right for Moyo-Modise to slot the ball into the top corner.

However, Free State Stars continued pushing forward and Ngcobo forced Josephs into another good save in the 39th minute.

The score remained 1-0 at half-time.

The visitors brought on top scorer Diyo Sibisi for Chabalala at half-time, in a bid to add more bite to their attack.

Stars went close in the 59th minute when Motseothata November shot just over the crossbar from outside the area following the hosts’ poor clearance of a free-kick by the visitors.

Moyo-Modise should have doubled the Students’ lead in the 65th minute when he was put through on goal by Bruin Senokoane, but the youngster’s effort was saved by Mweene.

Both sides then made a number of substitutions, which affected the flow of the game.

Free State Stars were awarded an indirect free-kick inside the BidVest Wits area in the 87th minute, but Ngcobo’s effort hit the wall.

Richard Rantjie almost made it 2-0 in the dying seconds of the game, but his fierce shot from the edge of the area was superbly saved by Mweene and with that went the final chance of the game.

The BB defense is fine....people have live with fact that Mokoena is the captain and will always be in the line by default I gas...coz according to me he the only one that need to looked at...it showed against Spain....he made life difficult for him and for Booth....he was supposed to close down Villa and Booth Torres and he failed with flying colors....I some comments blaming Booth...how can he mark two dangerous striker at the same time when he has a defending partner?I'm not his focus should have been only on Torres...but I saw it my two eyes when Villa lost Mokoena with ease and Booth tried to but he fractions too late...in my opinion Booth, Gaxa and Masilela need not to be chaged unless there is injury or suspenion...why fix something that's not broken?

Heita broer, I agree witchu no need to fix what's not broken,,,it's lyk saying: "We need to give Rowan F. a chance" for what: our defense has been doing okay,,and I believe in the training sessions they are (their combinations)working on the strengths and probably trying to rectify sum of their errors and weaknesses...a lot have suggested Moon to come for Gaxa and I just wondered what is that coming cos 'frankly speaking Pa has been on top of his game...maybe we should give support to all the guys who are representing us cos even those who are not starting the games do have an input kuma training sessions....So Spain is outta: haterz can now understand that 'FOOTBALL IS AN UNPREDICTABLE GAME'...we can do the same, with Faith, dedication, commitment and with a positive attitude: what a man can imagine, a man can do...ALL THE BEST BAFANA BAFANA...

Tpaz, you were watching a different game because the one i saw shows that USA had a game plan. They attack Spain in the first 15 minutes of the game to make their intetions clear that they a going to give Spain a game of their life. They got the goal and that made Spain to attack them because they need to draw level. This exposed Spain at the back because USA used counter attacks which led to their second goal. Tactically USA were superior compared to Spain because they never crack under pressure and with Spain it was different because everytime USA attack you can see that the Spainish defence was confused. You should also remember that USA are not ranked 14th in the World because they have the first black President (Obama), they are ranked higher because they can play football. Most of their players plays in Europe and they do have experience. Young Altidore plays in Spain La Liga and he is only 19 years old. If you watched USA against Italy, you will agree with me that if it was not for young Clark red card in the first half, USA could have beaten Italy as they played well with ten man the whole game. Against Brazil it was the same, they played for 33 minutes with ten man yet they still hit the post twice. This indicates that they never sit back in a game , they attack.USA is the most unlucky team in this tournament having three players sent off in a very controversial decisions but against all odds they are going to the final. Lets give them credit because they deserve it.

I am so glad I always knew spain have a weak point the have no sense of agency , their play depends on slow built ups and set pieaces.Skill less ,Torres is useless.
