Cosmos subdue Pirates

Posted: 5 April 2008 Time: 22:34

Orlando Pirates' faint title aspirations were dealt a severe blow as they drew 0-0 with Jomo Cosmos at the Johannesburg Stadium on Saturday evening.

Cosmos hardly had a shot on target, but Pirates really should have made more of their scoring chances.

The first half was lacklustre – if bad-tempered – affair, with both sides battling to string passes together and a number of bookings. The resulting free-kicks, however, were not capitalised upon, and the first half ended goalless.

Owen da Gama must have been disappointed when Mlungisi Gumbi was injured in the 25th minute, adding another to Bucs’ list of casualties.

Pirates fared better in the second half, creating a number of goal opportunities.

In the 48th minute, Bennet Chenene fired a shot over the crossbar from mid-range. In the 65th minute, Gilbert Mushangazhike sent a shot wide from close range, and in the 81st minute Tshepiso Tshabalala blasted a shot over the goals from within the penalty area.

Tonic Chabalala was on target in the 86th minute, but his shot was cleared by Valery Nahayo.

Morgan Gould picked up a second yellow in the 89th minute, and Cosmos finished the game with 10 men, but it was too late for Pirates to capitalise on their superior numbers, and the game ended goalless.

The result sees Pirates stay in fourth position on the log with 36 points, and Cosmos remain second from bottom with 20.

Hhayi, if I had to pick the worst game I've watched this season, it'll have to last night's game between pirate and cosmos. I admit I watched the first half only, but only because I couldn't stand being totured by those so called big teams. Atleast pirates tried some luck near the post, but as for cosmos, thy deserve to go down to mvela. But for the poorness of the game, I blame both teams. I swear, these guys do not have dstv at their place. You know, I don't know how this thing of holding the ball till you loose it help. They rather run like headless chickens and exhaust themselves in 45 min than letting the ball do the running. After watching two Barclay games, one of them being Arsenal v Liverpool yesterday, watching pirates and cosmos felt like, downgrading from Motorola V3 to a nokia 3310 (jst like I've done, not a nice feeling). Guys please, take note from the overseas teams, that is why our teams cannot compete with even the small teams from overseas. Jomo, plz fire the coach (I mean you!).

When setting the record straight I would just say," Cosmos u belong to Mvela and't Wates forget abt the league title. Can somebody answer me. Why Walaza always fail to score when he's on a one on ne sotuation or facing the post unmarked?

My brother i also share the very same sentiments. It is true Walaza was scoring because of hard work done by Masehe. They had a great combination. Ever since Masehe was removed from the start line- up for reasons i dont know Walaza has failed to score. I am a Bakaniya but now i can tell you this league is going to Cape Town.

Sbu', I'm sure you'll now agree when people, especially foreigners say our players are overated? Do you also think we have the pedigree @ national level to outplay any opponent European or otherwise with players from Pirates,Sundowns and Chiefs, as is always the case with our national team? Another topic on it's own.
