Chiefs beat Students

Posted: 20 February 2008 Time: 22:31

Kaizer Chiefs secured their first win of 2008 when they beat BidVest Wits 2-0 in an Absa Premiership clash at BidVest Stadium on Wednesday night.

Shaun Bartlett and substitute David Obua scored the goals to secure the crucial points for the Amakhosi.

The visitors made their intentions clear from the offset and were rewarded in the 12th minute when the impressive Onismor Bhasera crossed from the left for former Bafana Bafana striker Shaun Bartlett to head home.

Chiefs should have doubled their lead in the 18th minute when Bartlett shot wide of goal from close range, after latching onto a good cross by winger Arthur Zwane.

The hosts struggled to breach the Amakhosi defence, so much so, that they were forced to resort to long range efforts on Itumeleng Khune’s goal, none which seriously threatened Chiefs.

The first real chance for the Students arrived in the 34th minute when Phil Evans saw his shot cleared off the line by Mokete Tsotetsi, following a good build-up by the hosts.

The score remained 1-0 at the break.

BidVest Wits looked a much improved side in the second half when and should have leveled matters in the 71st minute when substitute Samuel Senokoane missed from close range after receiving a good pass from Clive Moyo-Modise.

The effort by the hosts seemed to spur Chiefs into action as they then piled the pressure on Moeneeb Josephs’ goal, with the Bafana Bafana keeper pulling off a superb save to deny Kaizer Motaung Jnr in the 74th minute.

However, there was not much Josephs could do when Obua slotted home from inside the area after latching onto a good pass by Bhasera.

I was washing the game and the win was a pure element of LUCK. Chiefs is still very much disorganised at the middle and bag line.

Much as my team won last night, but I'm appalled with the officiating. The referee and both his assistants took some dubious decisions. They almost spoilt the game, even the commentators were shocked.

Yesterday's win was good for Chiefs and looking at the log standing it clearly is a reflection of what's happening at Chiefs. We have the best defense record in the league but are flat upfront. This means we need a prolific striker and rid ourselves from the ones we have currently. Secondly, I'm rather disturbed by the manner Motaung has lashed at the coach and has interfered with his coaching duties. The next two games are crucial for us and we should treat them as cup finals. Zwane should regard this as his last season at Chiefs and should bow out gracefully before we start "booing" him. I'm still wondering why Micheal Nkambule is not playing. Also what is it that everybody sees in Mathebula to warrant him a place in the team????

Wits these days reminds me of Orlando Pirates when the coach was PAPIC. They used to play like Wits and won nothing. Wits was not supposed to lose both games of Pierats and Chiefs. They will continue to play entertaining football and win nothing. Goals is what needed in order to be happy at the end of the day. I'm still laughing at Thanda Royal Zulu cause it's clear now that they will only win when they are playing against chiefs.

Chiefs 1-0 SS – if Mushin plays the same squad…
Sundowns 1-1 Wits – Gordon is gonna blame the referee…
Pirates 0-0 Santos (I’ll be in cape town show I’ll be writing the story abt pirates ) don’t worry Pirates fans… wearing Oliver’s jersey. Da Gamma will say we are doing well… a draw is a gud score away 4rm home
