Stars defeat dismal Downs

Posted: 19 December 2007 Time: 22:07

Platinum Stars began life under new coach Miguel Gamondi in fine fashion as they defeated a dismal Mamelodi Sundowns 2-1 in an Absa Premiership encounter at Loftus Stadium on Wednesday night.

Gamondi got one over the man who took his job at The Brazilians almost two years ago, Gordon Igesund, who must now be in serious danger of the axe at Chloorkop as his side languish in 12th in the table with just three wins from 14 games.

There was plenty of cut and thrust in the opening minutes, but few clear-cut chances. Koketso Mmotong had a shout for a penalty when Michael Manzini appeared to haul him down in the Sundowns area on 12 minutes, but the contact was minimal and the referee waved play-on.

Lerato Chabangu let fly on 22 minutes from all of 30 yards, but the Stars goalkeeper Tapuwa Kapini got behind the ball to thwart Sundowns’ first shot on target.

Two minutes later Carelse was denied by a point-blank save from Kapini as he glanced a header from Chabangu’s free-kick goalwards.

But Stars took the lead on 31 minutes when Edward Williams’ cross-cum-shot flew over Calvin Marlin and into the net. Whether he meant it or not, only he will know.

Sundowns tried to respond but looked anything but championship material in the remainder of the first half as they were restricted to long-range efforts that were hopelessly off-target.

The one chance that did come their way fell to Benson Mhlongo at the back post, but his volley from a flick-on went across goal instead of towards it.

Sundowns had the first chance of the second half when George Mofokeng‘s backpass was too tame and Chabangu latched onto the ball, rounded the keeper, but could not direct his shot on goal from a tight angle.

Mofokeng almost sneaked one at the other end as he used his considerable height to rise above the defenders from a long throw, but his goal-bound effort was saved by Marlin.

The giant defender was in the thick of things and was lucky not to receive a second yellow card with 25 minutes remaining when he clattered into substitute Shakes Ngwenya when the ball had long gone.

Just two minutes later Surprise Moriri was denied by the crossbar when his thunderous free-kick from 35-yards was touched onto the woodwork by Kapini, and Dladla saw his shot deflected wide as panic set into the Stars defence.

Sundowns’ problems increased on 78 minutes though, when Mbulelo Mabizela’s foolish lunge on Mmotong led to his second yellow card of the evening and an early shower, leaving his teammates to battle on with 10 men.

The home side piled the pressure on their visitors in the closing stages as Stars played the dangerous game of sitting back on their lead, despite the numerical advantage.

And Ndlovu – the form striker at Downs in recent weeks – should have equalised when he headed wide from six yards when he should at least have hit the target.

But Stars went up the other end and substitute Joseph Mkalipa ended the game as a contest when he found space on the lefthand side of the box and unleashed a powerful shot that gave Marlin no chance in the home goal.

Ndlovu made up for his earlier miss when his header did find the target as the gap was closed to one with a minute left on the clock.

But the boos from the home support that greeted the goal scored by their own side spoke volumes for the mood of Downs fans, who seem to have lost faith in Igesund and his technical team.

Coach must go!!!!!!!4 a mere fact tht he doesn't have a vision..how do u get rid of youngsters(Robyn,Nunens) he's fucked up...in simple terms our team is old n tired...if there's one blunder Gordon was guilty of was not promoting some of few young playas.....Not undermining current aging playas bcos there is a great deal of xperience in such ages but at least he mix them with young ones so they grew, acclimatise to high football and learn to fight....Yesterday we were clueless....How do u go 4 such a long time without giving playas a chance...Kannemeyer has been on the sideline 4 quite some time even though our defence is always in sixes and sevens..nigga needs some game time dammit!in order for him to prove himself...well as for losing anutha game...every team in PSL goes thru this or at least teams who can claim to be champs knows this..we will come back fighting like a bull to reclaim and stamp our authority...and u know what all teams know this...as for Gordon...bye bye or I will be prayin AGAIN,that we lose come this weekend thats if u get a chance to be still in that bench....It's just a lean spell for a team that has won 2 consecutive leagues..just a reminder...

It must be noted that Gordon has won 4 league titles with four different teams because he hops from club to club as a result of his failure to build a team that can win and defend a league championship due to his overreliance on ageing players. What's the point of 'Downs having a youth development structure? He should be fired.

For an engen to work properly you need all your pieces perfoming at their best, If one piece is missing obvios you ll get negetive results that is exactly why I think loosing Torealba was a huge blow and I still dont understand why, this guy made you tick! But atleast he's found a new home and I would like to welcome him to our Glamour Boyz, The Golden Boyz The real Amakhosi!

I'm dissapointed the way ''abafana bestyle'' are playing, since their loss in the Telkom final things are not going their way.But that doesn't mean Gordon is not a good coach,We supporters were bragging about him last season when things were going right,it's only foolish\ignorant supporters that would want a coach like Gordon to be sacked they must go and have their heads tested.Sundowns is just having a bad run just like any other team.Stop putting Unnecessary pressure to the coach rather players that are not delivering.

Sundowns players play with less commitment and still live in the dream shade of their past victories. Its about time for renovations at the team, with players like Ndlela,Ngwepe,Ntwagae,Manzini,Apataki,Arendse,Kannemeyer,Acuna and Sapula getting the boot to give way for hungry, sensational and tender players.

Gordon you think you can defeat the creator of your team MR Miguel Gamondi, You know that saying "WHAT GOES AROUND COMES AROUND" it was nice when you took over from him and Tovey, sis you gained popularity with other peoples TEAMS and you never changed it well what you did is to come along with your dog Careless and buy the useless Apataki, if you need results you have to start from scratch and build you own team buy players who will suit your style.

Even myself if i was offered your job with Tovey and Gamondi players (Team) i could have won the league. Motsepe keep this guy so he can prove he is a good coach remember he said he is the best coach in our league and he wanted to be the best in Africa and he was proven wrong in the CAF cup. So let him prove his saying in the PSL.

Mr Motsepe, please come at our resque, we really need your assistance, whatever you do just get rid of Igusand and his pel Moloto before we fight for religation and before we make ourself a loughing stock in Africa. Mr Igusand why don't you do the correct thing and resign surely you can see your useles tactics are not working anymore and please take your Apataki with you when you leave we have no room for him. I apeal to all the Downs supporters to attend our home games an vent our anger at the technical team not violently so that they leave Sundowns in peace. Igusand Sowdows was there before you, just go away and thank you for the success you have broaght to the club but now it's about time to give someone fresh.

I think Mr Igesund has run out of ideas right now,but I also question the wisdom of bringing Trott to Sundowns technical team.Prior to his arrival, this team was not as bad as it is now.The only solution I can think off is to replace the entire technical team and also bring some new faces in the playing personnel whilst letting those players who are no longer keen to die for Sundowns in the field of play to go where their hearts are.

@siviwe what ru talking?.. u r the one who should have their Head & eyes check Brother.

Gordon failed to buy new & fresh players beggining of season & he expect to win the Leg with the same players who won it two previous season?.. NO ways.. this is PSL u need to refresh ur squad every season.. this is NOT Lesotho or Botswana Leg.. it's SA PSL it's competetive.

So Gordon should have bought new & fresh players..

& why is he playing that useless Calvin Marlin instead of the on form Baloyi?

He plays Old Man Manzini instead of our super youngster Robin Johannes?..Patrick Adapati?..SIES& u come here & say we need to be examined?

Come on Brother the Coach is failing Downs by fielding usless & Old Players...
