Thanda Royal Zulu FC moved off the foot of the Absa Premiership table with a come-from-behind 2-1 victory over Black Leopards at the Absa Stadium on Wednesday afternoon.
Defender Patrick Mayo scored a dramatic winner deep into injury time to help Thanda move to 13 points after earlier goals from Leopards’ Robert Ng’ambi after the hosts’ Brian Kgafane had left the teams locked at 1-1.
There were certainly no shortage of efforts on goal in the first half, but neither Leopards ‘keeper Mashudu Mamphitha nor his Thanda counterpart Mandlenkosi Tsengwa saw the back of their net rippled in the first 45 minutes.
Mamphitha was forced into a brilliant save just after half time from Clement Mazibuko and former Kaizer Chiefs striker Serge Djiehoua shot over the crossbar a minute later.
Just prior to the hour mark, Tsengwa had to tip a good shot by Leopards forward Mulondo Sikhwivhilu over the crossbar, as the visitors threatened on the counter attack.
With 62 minutes played, Eric Ramavhale picked out substitute Ng’ambi with a good cross and the Malawian international headed home to give Lidoda Duvha the lead.
But Thanda came up with an almost immediate reply, as Brian Kgafane fired a shot past Mamphitha from close range to bring the hosts level just three minutes later.
With the game seemingly destined to end in a 1-1 stalemate, Bernard Mnguni picked out Mayo deep in injury time and the former Chiefs defender scored from close-range to hand Thanda a priceless win that guarantees they will not be bottom by the end of the day.
