Bloemfontein Celtic Bidvest Wits Nedbank Cup

Posted: 13 April 2014 Time: 14:05

Bidvest Wits joined Maritzburg United, Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates in the semi-finals of the Nedbank Cup after a 2-1 win over 10-man Bloemfontein Celtic on Sunday.

Phunya Sele Sele opened the scoring through Musa Nyatama, but goals from Sibusiso Vilakazi and Jabulani Shongwe, as well as a red-card for Alfred Ndengane, saw the visitors claim victory at the Kaizer Sebothelo Stadium.

After a quiet opening quarter, the game came to life in the 24th minute with Celtic opening the scoring. Wandisile Letlabika appeared to be hauled down in the penalty area, but he quickly got to his feet and set up Musa Nyatama to stroke home the first goal.

The home side’s lead was short-lived as Wits equalised within a minute. A Jabulani Shongwe shot was controlled in the penalty area by Sibusiso Vilakazi to steer home a shot and make it 1-1.

Five minutes before the break, Phunya Sele Sele were dealt a double blow. First, defender Alfred Ndengane was shown a straight red-card for a professional foul on Vilakazi. Then, from the resulting free-kick, Shongwe picked out the top corner with a left-footed shot to make it 2-1 to Wits.

Celtic had also suffered the injury-enforced withdrawal of Keegan Buchanan. His replacement, Frank Mhango, arguably should have been sent off for a nasty tackle on Siyabonga Nhlapo that saw the Clever Boys midfielder replaced at half time. However, he received only a caution.

The second half saw the scoring opportunities and goal-mouth action dry up somewhat, though Celtic were left frustrated on a couple of occasions when they had strong appeals for penalties turned down.

Wits would have been disappointed at their inability to kill off the game with a man’s advantage, but ultimately an away win in Bloemfontein is always a good result and Gavin Hunt’s men will feel they are very much deserved semi-finalists.

Which team was a player short again and for almost a entire second half? Was it wits cause they were under pressure that entire half. Ooh I want wits next up and since mr chewy hunt talk kak last time around about them not having played any competitive football in weeks and that they deserved something out of that game, it would be great to draw them to settle the score. So I hope we draw them tomorrow, in fact I pray that we draw wits, geez I want them badly and I'll hold my fingers crossed for this. But big ups to Celtic for pushing those students all the way and they were very unlucky not to equalize in that last few minutes. 10 men pressure 11 like that? Once and always bucs.

Shabba  I thought of the same scenario but later remembered how chewy hunt undermined our win against them just after chan and decided that I want to kick them out khosi, you can have mu and we meet in the final. You should easily dispose off mu and although wits might and probably will prove sticky for us, I know we'll moer them dead. So wits is mine, all mine! Once and  always bucs.

Badelise  but they struggled against 10 men mos for almost a entire second half. Never mind not easy, how about lucky!  I want wits next up and hopefully get the zebras in the final if mu don't kick them out, hopefully not cause mu are so weak currently and escaped luckily against the nfd team, don't remember them but I don't care. Once and always bucs.
