Moroka Swallows SuperSport United Nedbank Cup

Posted: 26 March 2014 Time: 18:41

Moroka Swallows' woeful run in 2014 continued on Wednesday night at Dobsonville Stadium after a 1-0 defeat to SuperSport United in the Nedbank Cup last 16.

It was a game that was delicately poised until the second half, and it needed a goal from Thuso Phala to send Mtsantsantsa through.

The big news before the game was Jabu Mahlangu being handed his SuperSport debut, while Swallows goalkeeper Sage Stephens started in place of Greg Etafia.

Mahlangu nearly set up a goal within 60 seconds when he delicately chipped a ball towards Dino Ndlovu at the far post, but the striker failed to turn it on target.

The hosts were the ones with the majority of the possession and Giorgi Nergadze tested Ronwen Williams with a set-piece, with the young goalkeeper spilling the ball with his initial save.

Williams showed some strong hands later when he did well to hold onto Siyabonga Nomvete’s powerful drive after a cut-in from the left flank in an exchange with Vuysile Wana.

SuperSport’s best chance of the half fell to Phala on 36 minutes. The winger did brilliantly to turn on the ball before unleashing a powerful effort, but unfortunately his teammate Lebogang Manyama was in the way and it smacked him in the back.

Edward Manqele was found guilty of wasting a goalscoring opportunity at the restart when he fired Tsutsulupa’s cross over the face of goal.

Lerato Chabangu and Bennet Chenene were both thrown on for their respective teams as SuperSport went on to break the deadlock in the 68th minute.

Thabo Moloi supplied a great cross from the right to Phala, who picked it up on the edge of the box and fired an unstoppable bullet into the top corner.

Zeca Marques then brought on Dikgang Mabalane and Felix Obada in hope of finding of a late equaliser, while Phala narrowly missed a chance of scoring his second goal but for Stephens making a fine save.

Teams:

Moroka Swallows: Stephens, Mapemba, Isaacs, Hendricks, Mokgothu, Mbekile, Nergadze, Tsutsulupa (Obada 79), Wana (Mabalane 72), Nomvete, Manqele (Chabangu 62)

SuperSport United: Williams, Moloi, Fransman, Diouf, Khumalo, Gyimah, Mokeke, Phala, Manyama, Mahlangu (Chenene 62), Ndlovu (Niang 59)

Swallows real dead wood. I don't see them collecting point any time soon. They're fortunate that they already pocketed 27 points that guaranteed them survived from relegation.

I can only say thank you the coach of Supersport for giving Jabu a chance. u have demonstrated that before you are called a coach you are a human being who believes on second chances and forgiveness. Hope it inspires our young players and other coaches that 34 is not soccer retiring age but maturity
