Santos claim third

Santos have finished the 2007/08 Absa Premiership season in third place after a 1-0 victory over Platinum Stars at the Athlone Stadium on Sunday.

With Mamelodi Sundowns being thrashed 4-0 at home by Free State Stars, The Peoples Team took the opportunity to pip The Brazilians to third, and win a place in the CAF Confederation Cup for 2009.

The defeat for Stars, however, means they drop out of the top eight and will not play in the SAA Supa 8 Cup at the start of next season.

In a game devoid of many clear-cut chances, it was Erwin Isaacs who supplied the all-important goal as he headed home a Thomrick October corner on 39 minutes to seal the points.

Eleazar Rodgers and Romano Scott each had chances for the home side within a minute early in the second half, but neither could find the back of the net.
