Libya beat Ghana to win the African Nations Championship

Posted: 1 February 2014 Time: 22:51

Libya beat Ghana 4-3 in a penalty shoot-out to win the African Nations Championship after the sides ended goalless after extra-time at the Cape Town Stadium on Saturday night.

A tepid Final had finished in a goalless draw, with all the drama reserved for the shoot-out where Libya raced into a lead and then looked to have surrendered their advantage.

But a miss from Joshua Tijani in sudden death gifted the trophy to Libya, who ironically were the original hosts of this competition before the civil war in that country saw the tournament shifted to South Africa.

It is also a triumph for their Spanish coach Javier Clemente, who has only been in the job a matter of months.

There were few chances in the game, but the best did fall to the Libyans.

A defensive slip early on from Ghana saw Black Stars goalkeeper Stephen Adams rushing off his line to clear the danger, while Ghana thought they should have had a penalty for handball soon afterwards.

Both Ahmed Kamal El Trbi and El Mutasem Abushnaf had good headed chances to give their side the lead, but the former saw his effort saved and the latter did not hit the target.

The result meant that just one goal was scored in the final four matches of the Chan competition, with defences on top and a lack of creative ability to break them down.

Penalties looked inevitable and after Ghana missed their first two it seemed as though Libya would coast home.

But when the North Africans squandered their fourth and fifth effort it brought the Black Stars back into it, before Tijani put his effort wide of the left-hand post to blow the chances of his team.

Libya: Nashnoush - Al Alwany, El Trbi, Salama, Al Maghasi,Al Musrati, Saleh, El Gadi, El Houni, Abushnaf (Mahde 106'), Al Ghanodi (Omar 64')

Ghana: Adams - Saka, Ainooson, Sulley, Tijani, Attorbrah, Opuku (Owusu 119'), Akuffo, Anobaahm (Latif 99'), Mohammed (Yahaya 62'), Bancey

The North Africans are amazing, they managed to win two continental tournaments without playing professional football. I am pregnant of words and can only take off my red beret and salute them...

Here is a team with a coach that had only two months with the team winning a trophy without any competitive football in Libya....mind you winning a trophy away from home. And people tell us we must keep Gordon masende who failed WC qualifiers, AFCON at home, Chan at home, talk about condoning mediocracy!!! SAFA must do like Pirates and force Masende to resign!!!! Roger took pirates to 3 finals and is not good enough and Gordon take us no where near semi finals at home and some people tell us the problem is not the coach and continuity blah blah blah!!!!! I cnt believe Gordon is still a Bafana coach

Big congrats to Libya, they deserve to be the champs, no one gave them a chance but it once again showed how important it is for players to play football as a unit, be a team. It also shows just why cowdon needs to be sent packing. How can this team beat some of the better teams in the tournament and against all odds be crowned champs while cowdon is drunk at home from just playing a few games on home soil, is that the coach to lead our troubling country to be the best on the continent? Me thinks NOT! but this is Libya's moment and they deserves all the attention, once again congratulations to every Libyan, here and at home, they were awesome. Once and always.

As usual, Ghana dissipates all her energy playing Nigeria and come crumbling in her next game. History shows that Ghana most often loose her next game after playing against Nigeria. Hilarious!.......we make them sweat

dorcinx  I gave first place to  Nigeria because they had  an edge on the match against Zimbabwe .They dominated the entire game ,unfortunately Zimbabwe were a man down but it is not an excuse since Red card  is part of the game.In all,our Bafana should borrow a leaf from our Zimbabwean brothers.
