Maritzburg United booked their place in the next round of the Nedbank Cup with a 2-1 extra-time victory over 10-man Mpumalanga Black Aces at Harry Gwala Stadium on Saturday night.
The Team of Choice scored goals through Kurt Lentjies and Terrence Mandaza, while AmaZayoni found the back of the net via Ofentse Nato.
Sandile Zuke was sent off midway through the second half.
Maritzburg went in front when referee Victor Gomes gave a generous penalty to Lentjies after he was adjudged to have been fouled by Method Mwanjale, though replays showed there was minimal contact. Lentjies stepped up to convert the spot-kick himself.
The visitors leveled just before halftime when Nato scooped the ball home from Mbulelo Mabizela’s pass.
Zuke then lashed out and struck Maritzburg winger Frank Sarfo Gyamfi and received his marching orders, as he had done in the league meeting between the sides at the same venue earlier in the season.
It looked as though the game would be headed for penalties until a disastrous mix-up at the back for Black Aces gifted Maritzburg their second goal. Mabizela headed the ball away from his goalkeeper and when Abel Mabaso failed to clear, Mandaza had the simple job of tapping into an empty net.
