Nedbank Cup last-32

Posted: 22 February 2014 Time: 20:07

Maritzburg United booked their place in the next round of the Nedbank Cup with a 2-1 extra-time victory over 10-man Mpumalanga Black Aces at Harry Gwala Stadium on Saturday night.

The Team of Choice scored goals through Kurt Lentjies and Terrence Mandaza, while AmaZayoni found the back of the net via Ofentse Nato.

Sandile Zuke was sent off midway through the second half.

Maritzburg went in front when referee Victor Gomes gave a generous penalty to Lentjies after he was adjudged to have been fouled by Method Mwanjale, though replays showed there was minimal contact. Lentjies stepped up to convert the spot-kick himself.

The visitors leveled just before halftime when Nato scooped the ball home from Mbulelo Mabizela’s pass.

Zuke then lashed out and struck Maritzburg winger Frank Sarfo Gyamfi and received his marching orders, as he had done in the league meeting between the sides at the same venue earlier in the season.

It looked as though the game would be headed for penalties until a disastrous mix-up at the back for Black Aces gifted Maritzburg their second goal. Mabizela headed the ball away from his goalkeeper and when Abel Mabaso failed to clear, Mandaza had the simple job of tapping into an empty net.

Maritzburg United: Vries, Evans, Matuka, D Booysen, M Booysen (Awal 69’), Morton, Isaacks (Gyamfi 40’), De Jongh, Sekotlong (Mandaza 77’), Lentjies, Jayiya.

Mpumalanga Black Aces: Nhlapo, Mabaso, Mabizela, Nato, Mwanjale, Ngobeni, Zwane, Zuke, Ndoro, Khenyeza (Okonkwo 102’), Qalinge (Mulenga 77’).

Sorry Mazion, i love your display and had hoped you'll win the match. Khompela is doing wonders at maritzburg. The players seem comfortable on the ball since his arrival. Keep it up local coach.

His surname must be changed to penalty. And I think safa must take action about this kind of officiating because teams lose points and a chance of proceeding to the next level of knock out competitions because of refs like Victor. It seems like he enjoys being in the news for the wrong reasons.

Pirates ya Rona the question should be "is it a penalty or not?" or are you expecting him not to give him penalties the whole year no matter what is happenning in the box.

Bushbucks where in my comment did I say he shouldn't give penalties? It is obvious with penalties he has given that the man has got most of them wrong.
