Posted: 22 February 2014 Time: 14:35

Platinum Stars beat minnows Great North FC 3-1 in Rustenburg on Saturday to reach the last-16 of the Nedbank Cup.

The MTN8 and Telkom Knockout champions advanced thanks to strikes from Thabiso Semenya and Mahlatse Makudubela, and an own goal from the visitors at Royal Bafokeng Stadium.

Dikwena opened the scoring 32 minutes in, as Semenya converted a cross from veteran striker Henrico Botes.

Stars took their narrow advantage into the break, but were knocked back when Tshabalala slotted a 65th minute penalty for their SAFA Second Division opponents.

However, Allan Freese's charges regained the lead when Makudubela's cross was turned into the net by a Great North defender.

Makudubela later sealed the result with a fine finish.

Platinum Stars XI: Mpontshane, Mere, Gumede, Semenya, Mpeta, Sarr, Mathe, Ng'ambi, Tshabalala, Mbatha, Botes.
