Nigeria 0 Iran 0 2014 World Cup

Posted: 16 June 2014 Time: 23:23

Nigeria dominated for large parts, but failed to make their possession count as they played out to a goalless draw with Iran at Arena da Baixada in Curitiba.

The Super Eagles were expected to cruise past Carlos Quieroz’s side, and for large parts of the game they threatened to do just that, but every time the final was lacking and let Iran off the hook.

In fact, Iran could have grabbed all three points but for a brilliant point-black save from Vincent Enyeama in the first half.

Victor Moses shot straight at goalkeeper Alireza Haghighi early on, before Ogenyi Onazi fired across the face of goal.

The Eagles also had the ball in the back of the net on eight minutes, but it was rightfully ruled out for Jon Obi Mikel’s foul on the goalie.

Nigeria were forced into an early change when Godfrey Oboabona hobbled off with an ankle injury, with Joseph Yobo coming on for his 98th cap.

Ahmed Musa came close on the half-hour when his clever free-kick forced Haghighi to scramble a save, but then a huge moment as Enyeama saved brilliantly from Reza Ghoochannej’s close-range header.

Shola Ameobi was introduced early in the second half and had a great chance with 20 minutes to go when Juwon Oshaniwa crossed from the left – one of the few crosses to find the target – but the Newcastle United striker could only direct his header wide.

Mikel produced a lovely flick for Ozase Odemwingie to run onto and volley just wide, though the referee wrongly adjudged him to have handled, while Ameobi came close twice in the dying second, but the Eagles could not break through as the first draw of the 2014 World Cup was played out.

gabarinyo ha ha ha! HEY ndoda ungasho ulliphinde. I dont see any of the two coaches changing BB for the better if they come to RSA. SUFFER should try Gavin Hunt, Shakes Mashaba or bring back Clive Barker assisted by Khompela, Rhoo and/or Farouk Khan. if all that fails SUFFER should try me kwaaaaaa.

The referee on this game was the best i have seen in along time. That is what you call officiating. And men like him don't get much credit for their good work, so from my side i wud like to say big up to that man from Ecuador!

I am glad Nigeria got that lousy draw, in fact i prayed they lose. We would have a quiter Sunnyside, the underground trade would experience a minor recession, our kids would be a little healthier, some will even get a chance to go to rehab. I am aware this outcome might affect some of our most desperate ladies who like chowing "their money yooo" lol

sergebucs You are lying, Nigeria scored a legitimate goal but that ref robbed them. Nigeria was all over the Iranians. Your analysis is pathetic you are used to zebrish mediocrity damn.

Nigeria played well, Iran just parked a bus & hoped to catch Nigeria on counter attack. Nigeria scored but the goal was biasly disallowed.

Well Ngwede i agree with you a bit .. but still The Super Eagles were just not inventive in the fina third of the pitch ... Look the difference between Nigeria is that they  failed to penetrate and be creative on the wings and pull the defence out of their defensive positions ... i so wished they have a player like Simphiwe Tshabalala who would cut inside on the wings ... Iran was not that compact they have open spaces in their defence and they cleared the ball right back to Nigeria and they failed to utilise the position

lol nigerians, i think the problem is corruption, let keshi go out all over europe and bring together our talented guys, he knows where they are, by the way why should peter odewinge be on the bench while the likes of musa who always rush but does nothing with the ball be on in the game? i did not see any one playing in front of mikel, no one assumed that role.  so he has to lope the balls to moses and amenike. i think obi did his best but the problem is keshi, he sat down and watched his side loose not minding the feelings of millions of africa ^people that hoped on the guys, total rubish!!!!!
