Ecuador send Honduras packing
Posted: 20 June 2014
Ecuador kept alive their hopes of a World Cup last 16 appearance with a 2-1 win over Honduras at the Arena da Balxada as they joined second placed Switzerland on three points in Group E.
AS IT HAPPENED
After a relatively slow start, with both teams doing little to test either of the two goalkeepers, Honduras took a surprise lead just after the half-hour mark and Ecuador immediately responded here minutes later.
Costly did well to challenge for an aerial ball through the middle, and beat his marker for a clear chance on goal. The Honduran striker controlled well on the bounce and blasted a low shot past Ecuador’s Dominguez to make it 1-0 for Honduras.
Ecuador responded immediately after a deflected shot from Caicedo fell kindly for Enner Valencia who neatly placed it beyond Valladares to draw level three minutes later.
Honduras almost made it 2-1 just before the break after Carlo Costly’s header hit the up-right, and Bengston ran the rebound into the Ecuadorian net, but the referee blew for a handball by Bengston, who earned himself a yellow card for his protest.
The second half started much like the first half ended - with end-to-end action as the two sides went in search of the lead.
Ecuador came out tops after an Ayovi free-kick picked out Enner Valencia at the back post, whose header flew past Valladores to give Ecuador the lead for the first time in the match.
Honduras again found the back of the net but the goal was disallowed after Costly was rightfully adjudged to have been off-side before the ball had been tapped in over the line.
With Honduras not giving up in search of an equaliser, Ecuador did well to contain the continuous attacks from the Hondurans. The 2-1 result proving costly for Honduras as they exit their first ever World Cup and Ecuador remain in with a chance in Group E.
