Costa Rica reached the last-16 of the World Cup for the first time in 24 years after shocking Italy 1-0 on Friday - a result which also knocked England out of the competition.

FULL TIME: Italy 0-1 (Ruiz 43) Costa Rica.

90+2 - Brenes curls a shot inches wide of the top corner! So close there!

90+1 - Cassano pokes an effort wide off a corner. Difficult chance that.

90 - There will be four minutes of added time.

84 - Chiellini recovers nicely to deny Urena a shot on goal in the area.

80 - Costa Rica sub: Brenes replaces the goal scorer Ruiz.

77 - Cassano tries to find Balotelli but his pass is too strong and Navas collects.

74 - Costa Rica sub: Urena replaces Campbell.

71 - Costa Rica booking: Cubero is cautioned for not retreating quickly enough before an Italy free-kick.

70 - Italy sub: Cerci replaces Marchisio.

69 - Italy booking: Balotelli is cautioned for an off-the-ball incident.

68 - Marchisio finds Insigne with a wonderful diagonal ball, but the latter has strayed offside. Costa Rica sub: Cubero replaces Tejeda.

66 - Chiellini cleans up a ball over the top from Borges under pressure.

62 - As it stands, Costa Rica will advance to the last-16, while England will be knocked out. England need Italy to win here to stay alive in the competition.

59 - Buffon races off his line to beat Bolanos to a ball over the top. The flag was up for offside, but good awareness all the same from the Italian keeper.

56 - Italy sub: Insigne replaces Candreva.

55 - Tejeda slides in aggressively, but fairly, to arrest a strong run by Cassano.

53 - Navas palms away a dipping free-kick by Pirlo, which took a slight deflection off the top of the wall!

52 - Darmian steps in of the left flank before drilling a right-footed effort on target, which Navas does well to save!

50 - Cassano miscontrols in the box when a shot on goal was on! Poor stuff from the substitute.

49 - Balotelli goes down in the box under a strong challenge by Duarte. The ref, correctly, waves play on.

46 - We are back underway. Italy sub: Striker Cassano replaces midfielder Motta.

HALF-TIME: Italy 0-1 Costa Rica.

45 - There will be two minutes of added time.

43 - COSTA RICA GOAL! Ruiz heads home a left-wing cross from Diaz! Italy 0-1 Costa Rica.

42 - CONTROVERSY: Chiellini clatters Campbell in the box but the referee rules in favour of the Italian! That looked a penalty.

40 - Buffon scoops up a tame, bouncing effort from Gonzalez. He didn't really get hold of that.

37 - At the other end, Bolanos triggers a diving stop from Buffon with a strike from range! It's starting to open up a bit now.

33 - Balotelli thumps a volley low and hard from the edge of the area, but Navas drops down to make a sharp save!

32 - Balotelli fails to score from a one-on-one situation after being released by Pirlo's delightful ball over the top. Balotelli really should have at least hit the target there!

30 - Campbell thinks about the shot before trying to release the overlapping Ruiz, but Italy's defence are alert to the danger and clear.

28 - Ruiz is penalised for a high foot after winning the ball off Pirlo.

27 - Motta squeezes a first-time shot comfortably wide of the target.

25 - Umana does brilliantly to thwart Balotelli as he powered his way in to the box.

23 - Balotelli twists and turns in the box before being crowded out.

20 - Chiellini goes down swiftly after heading - arguably without choice - a powerful cross by Duarte from the left. The Italian seems to be all right, just a touch dazed.

18 - Buffon punches clear Bolanos's useful delivery.

17 - Marchisio's backpass fails to find Buffon, as Italy concede a corner cheaply.

15 - Patient build-up by Italy but their progress is derailed as Abate is blown up for offside down the right flank.

13 - De Rossi cleans up nicely in midfield to dispossess Campbell.

10 - Good tempo in the opening stages, with both sides showing promise going forward.

7 - Borges heads a corner over after Buffon came and failed to collect. Poor judgement from the Italian legend.

6 - Duarte is very lucky to escape a caution for a blatant foul on Marchisio.

4 - Costa Rica skipper Ruiz nips in ahead of the ageing Pirlo to gain possession in midfield. No doubt the Juventus maestro will be a watched man today, as always.

3 - At the other end, Bolanos tries his luck from range but he fails to get a decent connection and Buffon gathers with ease.

2 - Pirlo finds Marchisio with a ball over the top but the latter is offside.

1 - Italy get us underway!

There are some last-minute motivational talks going on, as the players gradually settle into formation.

It is now the turn of Costa Rica.

The players have taken to the field in Recife, with Italy first to deliver their national anthem.

Both countries won their respective tournament openers, with Italy edging England 2-1, while Costa Rica defeated Uruguay 3-1.

Uruguay yesterday beat the English 2-1, meaning the Three Lions need an Azzurri victory today if they are to avoid exiting the competition in the opening round for the first time in 56 years.

The teams have been announced:

Italy: Buffon (c), Darmian, Chiellini, Barzagli, Abate, Motta, De Rossi, Pirlo, Candreva, Marchisio, Balotelli.

Costa Rica: Navas, Gamboa, Gonzalez, Umana, Diaz, Borges, Tejeda, Ruiz (c), Bolanos, Duarte, Campbell.
