Ivory Coast got their World Cup campaign off to a winning start following a 2-1 victory against Japan on Sunday morning.
The Elephants were made to work hard for the three points after the Asians took a stunning 16th-minute lead - Keisuke Honda’s excellent finish at the near-post doing the business.
The Ivorians wasted chance after chance in the first half, but the introduction of Didier Drogba from the bench just past the hour-mark sparked the comeback.
Wilfried Bony got the first on 64 minutes when he headed home Serge Aurier’s cross from the right.
And two minutes later the turnaround was complete when Gervinho got onto he end of a cross – Aurier again the provider – though goalkeeper Eiji Kawashima should have done better.
Drogba had a few chances towards the end, but in the end Sabri Lamouchi’s men settled for a 2-1 victory which puts them in a great position to emerge from the group.
