Chile got their Group B campaign off to a solid start with a 3-1 victory against Australia at Arena Pantanal in Cuiaba.
A quick-fire double from Alexis Sanchez and Jorge Valdivia gave the South Americans the advantage as they found the back of the net twice in three minutes.
Tim Cahill halved the deficit when he netted towards the end of the first half – his 33rd goal for his country.
But any hopes of a comeback were dashed in the second half as Chile kept the Socceroos at bay and then scored a late goal through Jean Beausejour to ensure the win.
The three points take them second in Group B, behind the Netherlands on goal-difference after the Dutch demolished defending champions Spain 5-1 in the earlier match.
