Nhlakanipho Ntuli got the goal as Amajita beat defending champions Zambia 1-0 in the Cosafa Under-20 Cup in Lesotho on Saturday.
Champions Zambia came into the match after a frustrating 1-1 draw against lowly Namibia, while South Africa took to the field on the back of a 4-0 thrashing of the Seychelles in the first match.
Both teams started cautiously, knocking the ball around the middle of the park, although Siyanda ‘Rooney’ Ngubo did have an early chance, but had his shot saved by Mangani Banda.
Ntuli had a couple of chances inside the first half hour, shooting over the bar inside five minutes, before hitting a header on target in the 28th minute, which struck the keeper.
Fagrie Lakay forced a save from Banda at the restart, as Amajita continued to press the defending champions.
And the South African youngsters took the lead just ahead of the hour mark, when Ntuli made it 1-0 with a screamer from the edge of the area.
On 80 minutes Zambia were down to 10 men when Chibwe was shown his second yellow card.
Amajita now sit on six points in group C, with Namibia on four points, Zambia on one and Seychelles eliminated after two losses.
With Namibia beating the Seychelles earlier on Saturday, Amajita need just a draw against Namibia on Tuesday to top their group.
