University of Pretoria Bidvest Wits report

Posted: 19 March 2014 Time: 21:46

The University of Pretoria held Varsity rivals Bidvest Wits to a goalless draw in a League clash at Tuks Stadium on Wednesday evening.

The Clever Boys dominated proceedings from start to finish, but were left frustrated by a resilient AmaTuks defence.

Steve Barker made one change to the side that held Ajax Cape Town to a goalless draw last time out; Siyabonga Ngubane replacing Raymond Monama in the starting XI.

Meanwhile, Gavin Hunt made three changes to the side that lost 3-1 to Free State Stars at the weekend as Matthew Booth, Onismor Bhasera and Sthembiso Ngcobo all started.

Wits dominated the first stanza, moving the ball around with confidence and pressing the home side deep into their own box.

Jabulani Shongwe’s deflected effort shaved the effort in the 12th minute before Sibusiso Vilakazi squandered a golden chance 13 minutes later.

The Clever Boys skipper broke straight through on goal, but Washington Arbui rushed off his line to make a good save at the midfielder’s feet.

The visitors continued to boss proceedings with Calvin Kadi and Sboniso Gumede notably going close before the break.

Barker reverted to a back-five at the start of the second half, with Tebogo Monyai slotting in between Buhle Mkhwanazi and Siyabonga Shoyisa in a very defensive move.

Wits controlled proceedings in the second half, with the whole squad bar goalkeeper Moeneeb Josephs on occasions finding themselves in the opposition half.

Despite setting up camp in the opposition half, the Clever Boys were unable to break down a determined AmaTuks defensive unit.

The draw leaves Wits in third spot on the log, 11 points off runaway leaders Kaizer Chiefs, while AmaTuks move up one place to 10th.

wits were never in this race in the first place except that there are those who count chikens before they even lay eggs...I stil maintain that games in hand does not give you 3 points, you have to play first then we will see how many points you can get its very simple nher....

So Wits is slowly shying away from the top spot. Now we just have to eliminate Sundowns as we march on

Strange game indeed, one team (wits) camped for almost the entire game in the other's (tuks) half without necessarilbenefitting from it. It was like a boxing match where one player does all these clever moves and throw punch after the other but fail to land that knockout punch. But that tukkies can park a bus if they choose to and when barker brought on the 5 defender almost straight after half time, I knew he played for a point and even Josephs should've gone forward and help to get the goal but he chose the night off. Useless amatuks defend at home, really plus their 10 supporters loved it. Once and always bucs.
