A brilliant solo effort from Hellings Frank Mhango secured a 1-1 draw for Bloemfontein Celtic with SuperSport United in the Absa Premiership on Sunday afternoon.
Mame Niang gave SuperSport United an early lead, but Celtic fought back and could’ve sealed all three points if Lerato Lamalo managed to convert a clear-cut opportunity near the end.
Both coaches rang the changes with Ersnt Middendorp making three and Cavin Johnson no fewer than five changes for the crucial encounter.
Musa Nyatama, Gebadinho Mhango and Alfred Ndengane returned to the starting XI for the hosts, while Mame Niang, Aupa Moeketsi, Enocent Mkhabela, David Mathebula and Bennett Chenene started from the onset for Matsatsantsa.
Jonhnson’s choice to start with Niang paid off as early as the third minute. The Senegalese marksman ran onto a long ball forward by Sibusiso Khumalo before nodding past an onrushing Partrick Tignyemb to score his fifth goal of the season.
Recently capped Bafana Bafana goalkeeper Ronwen Williams did well to deny Lerato Lamola in the 17th minute.
The Siwelele marksman beat the offside trap before turning in-field, but Williams was on him in a flash to deny the hard-working striker.
United came within a whisker of doubling their lead in the 32nd minute. Enocent Mkhabela timed his jump perfectly but his powerful header only managed to canon off the crossbar with Tignyemb stranded.
United were the better side in the first half and again went close just before the break, Sameehg Doutie dragging his effort just wide of Tignyemb’s goal.
Matsatsantsa controlled most of the game but were undone by a terrific solo effort by Mhango in the 79th minute. The Malawian picked the ball off Dino Ndlovu before taking a few paces and hitting an unstoppable strike past Williams, who was rooted to the spot.
Lamola had a chance to complete the comeback four minutes later but the Siwelele forward could only manage to find the stands when he was sent straight through on goal.
United remain in fifth spot following the stalemate while Celtic move up one place to seventh on the Premiership log.
