Thokozani Sekotlong scored the only goal of the night as Maritzburg United beat Moroka Swallows at Harry Gwala Stadium on Friday night.
The striker netted the goal in the fourth minute, slotting a pass from Orlando Smeekes.
On a rainy night in KZN, it was the home side who had the better of the match, and they will consider themselves slightly fortunate not to have been punished for all the chances they missed, especially in the first half.
However, they did find the net early on when Smeekes found Sekotlong at the back-post, and he made no mistake with the finish.
Ryan de Jongh and Bhongolwethu Jayiya fired long-range shots wide before Smeekes headed against the crossbar after Greg Etafia misjudged a cross.
The midfielder had another chance to double the lead in the 35th minute when he lobbed the ball over the bar, before Sekotlong fired a shot across the face of goal on the stroke of halftime.
Smeekes again headed a corner wide, while Etafia had to be at his best to deny Jayiya following a mistake by Larry Cohen.
Sekotlong had one more chance late on, but in the end his early strike proved to be enough as Maritzburg move up to 13th place. Swallows, meanwhile, slip out of the top eight.
