Premier Soccer League match report AmaZulu 0-1 Bidvest Wits

Posted: 15 February 2014 Time: 17:48

New Bidvest Wits signing Sthembiso Ngcobo scored the winner against his former side AmaZulu in a 1-0 victory in Durban on Saturday night.

Ngcobo, who switched alliances last month, got his first goal for the Students 16 minutes into the encounter at Princess Magogo Stadium.

Wits came into this match after two successive losses at the hands of Orlando Pirates and Ajax Cape Town.

However, they made a bright start as Ngcobo headed home Papy Faty’s cross from the right flank.

Wits had the better of the exchanges in the first half and were largely guilty of not punishing the home side whose attack was toothless in the final third of the field.

Seven minutes before the end of the first stanza Wits should have taken a two-goal cushion into the break.

Another recent recruit Jabulani Shongwe interchanged passes with Ngcobo down the left flank, with the former finding his captain Sibusiso Vilakazi at the back post with a good cross, but the skipper could only fire his first time shot high off goal from close range.

Ten minutes into the second half another former AmaZulu man nearly punished the Durban outfit.

This time it was Siboniso Gumede whose effort went inches wide of goal when the ball fell to him on the edge of the box after a corner-kick.

The match would eventually end 1-0 in favour of the away side with Usuthu suffering their first defeat of the year.
