An own-goal from Bokang Thato Thlone saw Free State Stars suffer a 2-1 defeat to SuperSport United at the Charles Mopeli Stadium on Wednesday evening.
It was a slow start to the game as both sides lacked imagination in the final third and created very little in front of goal.
However, the game sprung to life in the 18th minute when Stars took the lead after Camaldine Abraw found the back of the net with a powerful header form a Richard Henyekane’s corner-kick.
After going behind United took firm control of the game as they tried to muster their way back into the match.
In the 23rd minute Bradley Grobler tried his luck from long range, but Tshepo Motsoeneng was equal to the task.
Five minutes later SuperSport drew themselves level thanks to a clinical finish from Innocent Enocent Mkhabela, who showed great composure in the box before slotting home.
The away side continued to dominate the match after that and only a brilliant save from Motsoeneng denied Thuso Phala from a free-kick.
Morne Nel also came close to finding SuperSport’s second goal with a stinging long-range effort that skimmed the wrong side of the woodwork four minutes before the break.
United started the second half as they finished the first when Dino Ndlovu let loose from the edge of the box a minute after the restart, but Motsoeneng was again up to the task.
Stars offered very little in attack in the second 45 with their best chance coming in the 61st minute when Abraw fired narrowly wide from 20 yards out.
In the 70th minute United made their second half pressure tell when Bokang Thlone turned the ball into his own net to give the away side the lead
Phala nearly made it three in the 84th minute with a long-range strike, but the keeper made another fine stop.
The win moves SuperSport up to fourth, while Stars remain in the promotion/play-off place in 15th position.
