Platinum Stars reasserted their pedigree with a 2-0 defeat of Ajax Cape Town in the clubs' final game of the year on Saturday night.
Dikwena, who were thumped 3-0 by Orlando Pirates in the League on Monday, bounced back via first-half strikes from Solomon Mathe and in-form attacker Robert Ng'ambi at Cape Town Stadium.
Victory lifted the MTN8 and Telkom Knockout holders to fifth place on the Premiership table with 22 points from 14 games - five points adrift of Kaizer Chiefs and three ahead of Ajax, who dropped one spot to eighth in the standings.
Stars had to make do without veteran defender Benson Mhlongo who had not travelled because of flu, but it made little difference as Ajax, who won their previous three games in a row, rarely threatened the goal of Siyabonga Mpontshane.
The opener arrived on 24 minutes as Elias Ngwepe, playing in a left-wing position rather than his usual fullback role, crossed into the box. Lindokuhle Mbatha picked up the ball and played a low cross that was whipped home at pace by Mathe.
Six minutes later and it was 2-0, with a virtual carbon-copy strike. Again Ngwepe crossed from the left, again Mbatha picked up the ball and this time his low centre was perfect for Ng’ambi to rifle home.
There was little more to enthuse about as Stars comfortably held Ajax at bay and then tried to hit them on the counter-attack, with Siphelele Mthembu having a couple of opportunities that he wasted.
Next up for Ajax after their festive season celebrations are Orlando Pirates, who they will face on January 27. Platinum Stars next travel to Polokwane City on February 4.
