Ajax Cape Town beat Maritzburg United 3-1 in a League clash at Cape Town Stadium on Friday night.
The ajax goals were scored by Eleazar Rodgers and a brace from Lebogang Manyama while Delron Buckley scored for United.
The game got underway under subdued circumstances as they kicked-off following a minute’s silence for the passing of Nelson Mandela.
Ajax immediately lifted the spirits of the occasion with a goal inside the second minute of play following some great work by Aiden Jenniker. The full-back latched onto a loose ball, ran up the field and cut in before crossing the ball to Eleazar Rodgers who side-footed the ball past Shu-Aib Walters.
Maritzburg United responded with an attack of their own four minutes later and they were left appealing a penalty after Peter Petersen was brought down by Keagan Dolly. Fortunately for the home side play was waved on.
The home side emphatically doubled their lead in the 13th minute when Lebogang Manyama brilliantly volleyed home Dolly’s cross from the byline with a powerful drive on the edge of the D.
The Team of Choice’s first offering on goal only occurred on the half hour when Mohammed Yakubu struck a powerful curling free-kick round the Ajax wall, forcing goalkeeper Anssi Jaakkola to punch away the ball.
Yakubu was the visitor’s most potent player on the night and he tested the Finnish shot-stopper with a powerful strike on the edge of the box which Jaakkola pushed out for a corner five minutes later.
The first 15 minutes of the second half was just kick about stuff but it soon welcomed two goals in two minutes on the hour mark.
Toriq Losper was brought down in the box after being sandwiched by Mohammed Awal and Mario Booysen, allowing for Victor Gomes to blow for a penalty. Mayama was forced to make a retake of his penalty which was saved by Walters and, upon the second try, made no error from the spot.
Clinton Larsen’s side then responded with a goal of their own when Delron Buckley struck home a first time shot off a cross to make it 3-1.
Curious scenes followed when three Ajax players were questionably cautioned in a matter of five minutes by referee Victor Gomes as Ajax went on to claim the victory despite a late score from Booysen’s glancing shot.
