Moroka Swallows beat Platinum Stars 2-0

Posted: 25 October 2013 Time: 19:50

Two late goals sealed a 2-0 victory for Moroka Swallows over Platinum Stars in their Premiership clash at Dobsonville Stadium on Friday night.

The victory moves the Birds to the top of the Premiership table, a point ahead of Mamelodi Sundowns and SuperSport United, and came via late strikes from Siyabonga Nomvete and Lerato Chabangu.

Platinum Stars were much changed from the line-up that has been doing duty in recent weeks, coach Allan Freese resting a number of his top names and bringing in five new players for this encounter.

They certainly had their chances to get the win, but were denied by good goalkeeping and stoic defending from Swallows.

Sibusiso Msomi should have done better when well-placed early on but his weak shot was snapped up by Greg Etafia, while Nomvete headed the ball against the crossbar at the other end.

Dikwena were unfortunate not to get a penalty when Robert Ng’ambi was blatantly fouled by Larry Cohen as he turned the defender, and the Malawi international also steered his free header straight at Etafia.

Ng’ambi them found himself one-on-one with the keeper, but could not finish, and Henrico Botes back-heeled wide from Mduduzi Nyanda’s low cross.

The deadlock was finally broken on 78 minutes when Edward Manqele’s hopeful hook over the Stars defence fell kindly for Nomvete to cooly slot underneath Siyabonga Mpontshane.

Chabangu made sure of the points when he drove into the box and crashed a shot past Mpontshane, though the keeper did get a hand to the ball.

I can now reverse my utterances blaming unfairly the management of Platinum Stars not gave Allan Freese a permanent post. I also demand the so called soccer analysts and journalists including Zola Madoda and Mabasa to retract their utterances for pushing Platinum Stars management to put Freeze permanently as a head coach. Look now, they failed to beat Swallows. Beating Downs and rats doesn’t automatically make you a good coach or good team. A good coach must also beat the small teams like Swallows.

Nice game to watch. Happy for the home team to win. This weekend's games will be won by home teams, no doubt about that. Allan Freese got excited and pulled off their match winner Robert Ngambi hoping for a point away from home. The forceful Mthembu should have started the game instead of the tired looking Bootes. This result serve as a warning to Platinum Stars that they should treat every game as if they play pirates or sundowns.......Congratulations to Swallows
