PSL match report: Mpumalanga Black Aces vs SuperSport United

Posted: 15 September 2013 Time: 17:27

SuperSport United had to come from behind to secure a 1-1 draw with newly promoted Mpumalanga Black Aces to stay top of the Premiership log.

Mabhuti Khenyeza opened the scoring for the home side on the stroke of half-time before David Mathebula earned Matsatsantsa a point 11 minutes from time.

Former Orlando Pirates duo Mark Mayambela and Dennis Masina failed to make the match day squad for the home side owing to injury, but Abia Nale, on load from Kaizer Chiefs, made a start next to former Matsatsantsa forward Mabhuti Khenyeza up front.

For SuperSport, Rowen Fernandez started between the sticks with Ronwen Williams dropping to the bench. The start was the former Bafana Bafana shot stoppers first League start in exactly a year.

Aces looked the more threatening in the early exchanges, with Eduardo Ferreira going closest in the first 20 minutes.

The Brazilian centre-back was well positioned in the area but directed his header off target, with Fernandez caught in no man’s land after failing to gather an Amazayoni corner-kick.

As the half drew on SuperSport started to find their rhythm and went close in the 29th minute, when Bradley Grobler latched onto a low cross by Thuso Phala, but he was brilliantly denied by Bafana Nhlapo from point-blank range.

Nale then went close for Amazayoni on the half hour mark, finding himself through on goal but only managing to drag his shot wide when it looked easier to find the back of the net, although Fernandez must be credited for closing Nale down quickly.

Khenyeza scored on the stroke of half-time against his former side, reacting quickest in the area and slotting a loose ball skilfully past Fernandez.

Matsatsantsa struggled to break down a well organised Aces defence in the second stanza but finally found an equaliser in the 79th minute.

Second half-substitute Mame Niang yet again showed his effectiveness in the area as he cleverly flicked on a long throw which Mathebula nodded home.

Both teams went all out for the winner, with Mathebula hitting the upright in stoppage time.

Truth be told, Abia Nale need to accept and start playing indoor soccer because proper football is not for him. He cannot tackle, pass, cross and/or score even if it's an open net. He's been in the PSL for a while but his performance is still like an apprentice youngster.

There's this boy Themba Zawne, I think he's a good player. The only thing that lacks with him is adding upper body strength and increase his work rate in that he should get more involved in initiating moves !!!
