Matitzburg United beat Polokwane City

Posted: 3 August 2013 Time: 22:14

Yakubu Mohammed scored the only goal of the match as Maritzburg United defeated Polokwane City 1-0 in a League encounter at the Harry Gwala Stadium on Saturday night.

United’s new frontman Mohammed was full of running throughout the match and was not shy to fire towards the target and was eventually rewarded with a goal midway through the second half.

The Ghanaian showed his intentions from the onset, sending his powerful free-kick over the crossbar in the fifth minute, before shooting wide of the upright seconds later.

Six minutes later United goalkeeper Shu-aib was forced into action, diving to his right to parry a misdirected clearance from his own defender Mario Booysen, which almost flew into the back of the net.

United then had two good chances to break the deadlock, but Mohammed headed Dillon Sheppard’s cross wide in the 16th minutes, while the latter curled his free-kick over the bar three minutes later.

Heinrich Isaacks should have broken the deadlock in the 31st minute when he was left alone at the far post to meet a low cross from Ruben Cloete, only to fire wide of goal.

Ernst Middendorp’s side had a penalty appeal turned down in the 44th minute when Cloete was caught with a late tackle on the edge of the penalty area but the referee awarded a free kick just outside the box.

Mohammed took over the set piece duties once again but the Ghanaian failed to trouble City goalkeeper and captain Modiri Marumo as his effort sailed wide of goal.

Duncan Lechesa’s men had the first chance of the second half in the 55th minute, but Thabo Rakhale was denied by a good save from Walters, who also managed to push the ball away from the onrushing Sphesihle Nzimande.

The deadlock was broken in the 68th minute from a free-kick which saw Sheppard nudging the ball towards Mohammed, who then blasted his low shot into the back of the net to send the home crowd into frenzy.

Terrance Mandaza tried to extend the lead in the 82nd minute when he unleashed a shot from outside the box, but his effort went wide as United held on for a slender win.

The Polokwane City boys are just brimming with skill... but they are just shackled by coaches instructions... the mandate of newly promoted teams must change from surviving the 1st season (which never happens anyway) to playing the most entertaining skills driven football they can play... I really want to see the full potential of the new players that come into the Psl....

They will be relegated... especially if they continue with this "professional" play-to-score approach...

Plus, they didn't play like they are hungry to succeed, this was an opportunity to make a first impression even to mainstay teams in the psl, what a bad impression they made...

Ayeye Rodger, this is another scathing indictment on his prudence as a coach..,.... The 30' trialist will definitely get into double figures... he's in love with shooting... he tries...

Ayeye Bhakaniya. Spot on with some of ur points more crucially the one about these guys just playing to score without any proper structure.

Me thinks the Psl's stance on forcing NFD teams to implement the u23 rule is counter productive. When these teams are promoted 1 of 2 scenarios happens. They either get relegated straight after the 1st season or they do a MP ACES. And buy an entire team full of experienced nd over the hill has beens who are only interested in a big payday. So teams have to pay a lot of wages or are suddenly facing bankruptcy from being relegated. So the psl needs to re think the stupid u23 rule nd the relegation scenario coz NFD teams are mainly disadvantaged seeing that they hardly have PRE season due to the playoffs.

PLK should get 4 experienced campaigners to guide these young guns and they will survive. Aces on the other hand have a massive Hurricane brewing, watch this space
